(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt College Lady Defender improved their record in the Great Plains Athletic Conference to 6-5 with a 68-58 win over Nebraska Wesleyan in Sioux Center on Saturday afternoon.
The Lady Defenders started fast with Jill Haan making a pair of free throws to go ahead 15-4. Wesleyan fought back to within three with a steal and layup with 1:43 remaining in the half and the Lady Defenders answered back with a four point run, to go up at half 32-25. The last three points of the run came on a three-point basket by Lindsey Van Wyk.
Wesleyan made another charge in the second half, this time cutting the lead to two on three different occasions in the second half, the last time at 54-52 with 5:51 remaining in the game.
From there the Lady Defenders coaxed a five point lead, getting a jumper by Jill Haan and sealed the win with free throws, making 9-11 free throws in the final minute.
Dordt was paced by Kristin De Ronde's 14 points, all of which came in the second half. The freshman post player also had ten rebounds to lead the Lady Defenders, with Rachel Van Beek, to a 45-30 rebound advantage. Jill Haan and Tara De Boer both had 13 points while Shawna Flikkema, Lindsey Van Wyk and Kathryn Ferrie all had seven points. Kara Karlsgodt led the Lady Defenders with four steals and Jill Haan had three assists.
Flikkema becomes the 20th player in Dordt College women's basketball history to score 700 points.
Nebraska Wesleyan was paced by Samantha Porter with 18 points and Angie Schlecht had 13.
