Dordt College JV Men's Basketball vs. Northwestern

February 10, 2014

(Sioux Center, Iowa) By: Sam Ekstrom

In a game of runs, the Dordt Defenders junior varsity wound up on the wrong end, dropping their home finale by a 95-86 score to the Northwestern Red Raiders.

Dordt jumped out to an 11-point advantage in the first half with Michael Den Herder pouring in 15 first-half points to pace the Defenders. However, Northwestern got a buzzer-beating 3-point shot from Elijah Ihnen to end the first half that cut the Red Raider deficit to three at 49-46. Ihnen had 14 points before halftime.

Northwestern stormed out in the second half and took a commanding lead with a 23-9 run. The Red Raiders used swarming defense and a swift transition offense to overwhelm Dordt College and take a double-digit lead.

The Defenders made one final run to pull within three points as Zach Zylstra made several difficult shots late in the game. But with the score 77-74, Northwestern turned several steals into fast-break points in an 11-2 run that put the game out of reach.

Ihnen led the Red Raiders with 23 points. Trevon Moody notched 15.

Dordt got 27 points from Michael Den Herder and 20 from Zach Zylstra. Unfortunately, the Defendersí slow start to the second half was too much to overcome. They fell to 10-10 on the year and have one game left at Morningside on Feb. 13.
