January 29, 2014
(Sioux City, Iowa) The Dordt College menís basketball team notched yet another win as they dropped Briar Cliff 87-76 this evening in a GPAC outing played in Sioux City, Iowa in front of a nice sized crowd of Defender faithful. With the victory the Defenders improve to 13-1 in the conference and 22-2 overall while Briar Cliff falls to 7-7 in GPAC play and 14-10 this season. On Saturday, the Defenders will travel to Hastings to take on the Broncos who currently sit in second place in the GPAC title race.
Austin Katje drilled a three point basket to break the fourth tie in the early stages of the game, putting Dordt up 11-8 with 15:32 to play. Dordt was able to open up a five point advantage (15-10) on a Nathan Rindels layup at 14:18 but an Austin Lefler three pointer put the Chargers back within two at 14:08 and the two sides were knotted 17-17 at 13:01 after a Ricky Williams layup. A 10-0 Defender run punctuated with a Trevor Wolterstorff three pointer had the Defenders up 27-17 midway through the half.
Trailing by 10 (29-19) the Chargers got a made three from Clayton and a layup from Ricky Torres to get within five (29-24) but Austin Katje stopped the mini-run with a three point basket at 7:42 to put Dordt on top 32-24 and a layup from Nathan Rindels pushed the Defender lead back to ten. After another made three from Katje the Dordt advantage was 11 (37-26) when Harreld Clayton added another three pointer followed by a Shane Graves jumper to get the gap down to 37-31 with 5:45 to play. The Dordt lead was still six (39-33) when back to back makes from behind the arc for Dordtís Bryan Sumner pushed Dordtís cushion up to a dozen (45-33) with 4:17 to play. The two teams combined for just one made field goal for the duration of the half and the Defenders enjoyed a 45-35 halftime edge.
Two in a half minutes into the second period, the Dordt lead was 49-38 after a pair of Rindels free throws when Clayton nailed another three for the Chargers and Briar Cliff added a couple free throws to get within six (49-43) with 16:20 remaining. A Katje layup and a three pointer from Bryan Sumner at 14:47 extended the Dordt lead back to 11 (54-43) at 14:47. A Tyler Wolterstorff jumper at 11:18 pushed Dordt out to a 15 point advantage (60-45). The Chargers would be unable to cut the gap down to single digits over the final eleven minutes and the Defenders led by as many as 18 in picking up their 22nd win of the season.
"The first six minutes of the game and a few minutes to start the second half we weren't great defensively but other than that I thought we made things pretty difficult for them and we played solidly. We got better defending the perimeter and that was important for us as well. It was a very good team effort tonight, it wasn't anything flashy but we played hard and we played together," added Dordt Head Coach Ross Douma.
The Defenders were led in scoring by Austin Katje who hit 7 of 19 from the floor with four of ten on threes and two of two from the line for 20 points while also grabbing four boards and dishing out three assists. Wolterstorff and Rindels both finished with 14 points while Kyle Lindbergh and Dalton Franken both added ten. Kyle Lindbergh snared eight rebounds and Rindels tossed out four assists.
Shane Graves and Zach Otting both contributed 14 points for the Chargers while Clayton Harreld and Bryan Forbes both had 11.
The Chargers held a slight 37-35 rebounding advantage over Dordt and the Defenders committed 18 turnovers while Briar Cliff committed 14.
