Dordt College Men's Basketball vs. Northwestern
January 15, 2014
(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt College men's basketball team earned their 18th win of the season this evening, dropping rival Northwestern 78-64 in a GPAC outing held in Sioux Center. The Defenders are now 18-2 on the season, with ten regular season contests remaining, and are 10-1 in the conference while the Raiders fall to 11-9 on the year and 4-6 in GPAC play.
The Defenders trailed very briefly in the opening five minutes of action as Isaiah Taylor layup put the Raiders on top 9-8 with 14:54 to play. Alex Terpstra buried a three pointer at 14:10, putting Dordt up 11-9 and the Defenders would never trail again with Terpstra knocking down back to back threes to give Dordt a 14-9 advantage. A Tyler Goldston dunk at the 6:46 mark, had the Raiders behind by five (27-22) but instead of igniting Northwestern the slam served to propel the Defenders as Dordt picked up a pair of free-throws from Austin Katje and back to back threes from Wolterstorff and Terpstra to push the Dordt advantage to a baker's dozen (35-22) with 3:40 to play. A Patrick Knoblauch layup with six seconds left in the half allowed Dordt to match their biggest lead of the half (14) as the Defenders took a 39-25 edge after 20 minutes of action.
Dordt opened the second half on an 8-1 run and took a 21 point lead (47-26) on a Lindbergh jumper at the 18 minute mark. The Defenders extended the lead to as many as 26 (60-34) on a Rindels layup with 11:12 to play. Dordt continued to enjoy a twenty point cushion (75-55) with just over five minutes left when Northwestern made one final surge, knocking in three straight baskets to cut the gap down to 14 (75-61) A Dalton Franken jumper at 3:13 stifled any hope in a comeback and the Defenders picked up their tenth conference victory with the 78-64 result.
Kyle Lindbergh racked up yet another double double for the Defenders as the senior forward led the Defenders with 17 points while ripping down 13 rebounds while also contributing three assists, three block and one steal. Lindbergh was eight of sixteen from the field and one of two from the line. Dalton Franken added 16 points, going seven of 18 from the field and two of two from the charity stripe. Nathan Rindels added 14 points and Austin Katje and Alex Terpstra both added a dozen with Terpstra hitting four of six from three point range. Lindbergh and Franken both had three assists while Katje and Wolterstorff both pulled down seven boards.
The Defender defense held the Raiders to just two guys in double figures with Habtemariam contributing 13 points and Zack Leeper added 12. Rob Gill and Levi Ettleman each pulled down a half dozen rebounds and dished out three assists.
Comments from the coach:
"We really played well for the opening thirty minutes of the contest tonight and really did a nice job defending Habtemariam and Leeper. We had good individual and team help on those two guys and they are both very good players. Lindbergh did a good job attacking early in the first half and got us going. Now it's time to quickly put the rivalry win behind us and focus on Doane."
