Dordt College Men's Basketball vs. AIB-Dordt College/Holiday Inn Express Classic
November 29, 2013
(Sioux Center, Iowa) A pair of double doubles by David Den Herder (13 points and 11 rebounds) and Dalton Franken (11 points, 11 rebounds) helped propel the Dordt College Defenders past the AIB Eagles by a score of 87-65 this evening in the Dordt College/Holiday Inn Express Classic. With the victory the Defenders improve to 9-1 on the year while AIB falls to 0-8.
A three point basket by AIB's Brandon Rosales had the visitors up by seven (13-6) four minutes into the first half and a Jace Ver Steeg three pointer with 9:16 to play allowed the Eagles to maintain their seven point cushion (29-22). A 15-4 over the next eight minutes allowed the Defenders to race past the Eagles, taking a four point advantage (37-33) on a Dalton Franken layup at 1:45 and Dordt took a 39-37 lead into half-time.
"We didn't play well in the first half and we seemed sluggish," remarked Dordt Head Coach Ross Douma, "and you have to credit AIB because they took advantage of that and they shot the ball well. David (Den Herder) and Tyler (Wolterstorff) played well in the first half and kept us in the game. David really asserted himself in the low block and rebounded well. In the second half we did a much better job on the defensive end of the floor, we closed out well and we got out in transition."
Second half defense by the Defenders quickly created some separation as Dordt started the half on a 20-5 run to go up 59-42 with 14:12 left in the half. A Brandon Eley jumper at 12:50 would put the Eagles within 14 (59-45)but the Defenders continued to pull away and opened up a thirty point (79-49) cushion on an Alex Terpstra three pointer with five minutes to go and the visitors would get no closer than 21 down the stretch and Dordt College has now won six games in a row.
David Den Herder shared game high scoring honors with Brandon Eley from AIB as both players had 13 points. Den Herder was five of seven from the floor and and three of four from the charity stripe while also ripping down 11 boards. Dalten Franken also had 11 boards and added 11 points with Franken hitting four of nine from the field and three of four from the line. Tyler Wolterstorff and Alex Terpstra both had a dozen points with Wolterstorff hitting five of nine from the field and two of two from the line while Terpstra nailed four of six from beyond the arc.. Bryan Sumner had a team high three assists for the Defenders.
Brandon Eley topped the Eagles with 13 points on six of eleven from the floor and one of one from the line, while also yanking down a team high eight caroms. Shaun Clark and Brandon Rosales finished with 11 and 10 points respectively.
The Defenders owned the boards, pulling down 43 rebounds while AIB grabbed just 23 and the Eagles managed just one offensive rebound. Dordt forced the Eagles into 14 turnovers and the Defenders lost the ball only eight times.
Dordt finished the night shooting 31 of 68 (45.6%) from the field with seven of eighteen (38.9%) from three point range and a stellar 18 of 20 from the line (90%).
After hitting 60.7% in the first half, the Eagles cooled off, ending the night at 49.1% (27-55) from the floor, with eight of seventeen (47.1%) from three point range and three of five from the line (60%).
