Dordt College Men's Basketball vs. Valley City State

(Valley City, North Dakota) The Dordt Defender menís basketball team earned its first win of the season in a season opening 100-93 win over Valley City on Friday night in North Dakota.

Dordt trailed 50-37 at halftime after an AJ McDonald three-pointer and a steal and dunk by Jeff Romeus gave the hosts the momentum at the intermission.

Dordt recovered to score the first six points of the second half to get within striking distance and steadily cut the lead down before Austin Katje drained a three-point basket with 11:05 left in the game. Valley City answered with a three of its own but Dordt evened with a Tyler Wolterstorff basket at 70-70.

Dordt gradually pulled away and looked poised to stay in control with an 86-80 advantage with just over two minutes remaining. A missed shot by Valley City State was rebounded by Dordt but a foul was called on Dordtís Dalton Franken, sending him to the bench with his fifth foul. A technical foul was also assessed on the play, giving the hosts four free throws which they converted on to trim the lead to two points.

Back to back three-point plays by Kyle Lindbergh and Tyler Wolterstorff re-established control for the Defenders and they took the seven point win.

Dordt converted 72 percent of their shots in the second half and were 35-60 from the field for 58 percent in the game while Valley City was 29-57 for 51 percent. Dordt had a decided advantage on the boards with a 34-24 edge.

Austin Katje, Kyle Lindbergh and Dalton Franken all had 22 points and Tyler Wolterstorff had 21. Lindbergh led all players with ten rebounds and Katje had seven. Nathan Rindels handed out five assists and Alex Terpstra had three steals. Katje also went over 1,000 career points as he entered the game with 987 career points.

Valley Cityís AJ McDonald had a game high 33 points and Mac Kroeplin had 13 while Aaron Duske had 14.

Dordt is 1-0 this season and Valley City falls to 0-1. Dordt faces Jamestown on Saturday while Valley City hosts Northwestern.
