Dordt College Men's Basketball vs. Doane
February 16, 2013
(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt College Defenders got 82 points from their five seniors on senior night and ran away with a 104-73 GPAC game to cap off the conference regular season. Dordt finished the conference schedule with a 15-5 record and an overall mark of 23-6 while the Tigers end the GPAC regular season with an 11-9 record and are 21-9 for the year and Doane has lost their last six GPAC outings.
The two teams "These senior guys get along really well and that permeates through the entire team," noted Dordt Head Coach Ross Douma, "it was a really nice way for these five seniors to end their regular season play at Dordt."
The two teams opened with four ties with the last one at 8-8 at the 16:54 mark. The Defenders eventually got up 14-8 on a lay up by Jordan Vogel with 15:33 remaining. Doane fought back to take a 23-22 lead with Shavontae Samuels hitting a three-point basket. The battle was even for the next five minutes with a tie at 33-33 with 5:58 remaining in the half. Five straight points by Dordt on a Trevor Wolterstorff basket and a Cliff Warner three-pointer opened a 38-33 advantage but Doane kept coming back, trimming the difference to 42-40 with 2:03 remaining.
From that point the Defenders controlled the game, building a 49-43 halftime lead. Dordt outscored Doane 13-3 to open the second half and the hosts rolled from there, outscoring the Tigers 55-30 after the break for their fourth win in a row and seventh out of their last eight.
Dordt College had five players in double figures with Jordan Vogel posting 22 points for the Defenders on nine of fourteen from the floor and four of six from the line while also grabbing six caroms and blocking three shots. Cliff Warner added 20 points on six of ten from the field, hitting five of eight from beyond the arc and three of five from the free throw line. Chris Sievers hit five of ten from the floor and eight of eleven from the line for 18 points and Trevor Wolterstorff shot seven of nine from the floor and two of three from the line for 16 points. Austin Katje rounded out the double digit scorers with ten points on three of seven from the field with two of five from three point range and was two of two from the charity stripe. Kyle Lindbergh led all players with seven rebounds and the junior was also a perfect three for three from the floor.
Shavontae Samuels was eight of nineteen from the floor with three of six from beyond the arc and three of four from the line to match game high honors with 22 points. Connor Beranek was four of eight from the floor with two of three from long range and three of four from the line for 14 points. Domonique Smith and Jens Scholl finished with 12 and 11 points respectively.
"We had really good ball movement in the second half and our post players did a great job presenting themselves in the post and our guards were very good at getting the ball into them, it was a very gratifying outcome," remarked Douma. The Defenders will face the seventh seeded team in the GPAC at home on Wednesday, February 20. "There is a lot of balance and parity this season in the GPAC so no matter who comes in here we will need to be prepared, there are just so many good teams," said Douma.
