Dordt College Men's Basketball vs. Mount Marty

(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt College men's basketball team knocked off a pesky Mount Marty squad by a score of 86-72 to improve to 7-1 on the season and 1-1 in the Great Plains Athletics Conference while the Lancers drop to 3-4 on the year and 0-2 in the GPAC.
The Defender men used a 13-2 run, capped by a Kyle Lindbergh dunk with 3:18 to play in the first half, to turn a 5 point lead (25-20) into a 16 point cushion (38-22)and Dordt took a 13 point advantage (43-30) in to halftime.
A Cliff Warner 3 pointer at 14:24 in the second half gave the Defenders their largest lead of the game at 19 (58-39)and Dordt's cushion hovered between 11 and 15 for most of the second half. A Trevor Wolterstorff old-fashioned three point play gave the Defenders a 15 point lead(73-58) with 7:05 to play. The Lancers rallied with a 7 point run, 5 of them on free throws, to cut the Dordt edge down double digits (73-65)with 3:23 left on the clock. The Defenders squelched the Lancers momentum with a Vogel dunk and 4 straight free throws by Cliff Warner go back up 14 with 2:20 to play and visitors would not cut in to the double digit lead the rest of the way, securing the GPAC win.
Dordt's Cliff Warner paced the Defenders with 20 points on 5 of 9 from the floor, with 4 of 6 from beyond the arc and 7 of 10 from the free throw line; Warner also dished out a game high 5 assists and grabbed 2 rebounds and a steal. Trevor Wolterstorff had 20 points for the Defenders on 9 of 13 from the floor and 2 of 6 from the stripe, while also grabbing a game high 8 boards. Jorden Vogel finished with 12 points on 4 of 6 from the floor and a perfect 4 of 4 from the line. Chris Sievers also had a dozen points on 4 of 6 shooting with 4 of 5 from the charity stripe. Kyle Lindbergh rounded out the double digit scorers for Dordt with 10 points on 4 of 6 field goals and 2 of 2 from the line.
Jeff Larsen had a team high 14 points for the Lancers on 6 of 8 from the floor and 2 of 2 from the line. Smith Salidin was the only other player from Mount Marty in double figures, scoring 11 points on 4 of 12 from the floor and 2 of 2 from the stripe.
The Defenders shot 58.8% from the floor on the night and were 16 of 24 (66.7%) in the second half. Dordt made 6 of 16 three pointers (37.5%) and were 20 of 29 (69%) from the line.
Mount Marty finished at 43.3% from the floor on 26 of 60, making 7 of 17 (41.2%) from beyond the arc. The Lancers were solid from the free throw line, hitting 13 of 16 (81.3%).
Dordt College dominated the boards, grabbing 38 rebounds while holding the Lancers to just 22. The Defenders had some turnover issues, coughing up the ball 24 times while forcing the Lancers in to committing 17.
"We really did a nice job being aggressive and putting pressure on the basketball in the first half," stated Dordt Head Coach Ross Douma, and there were certainly lots of positive things to build on and we definitely had to play hard the entire 40 minutes. We did not do a good job taking care of the basketball and at times weren't clicking on all cylinders but it was not due to a lack of effort or concentration on our part."

The Defender men will have a week off, returning to action when they travel to Mitchell, SD on Wednesday, November 28 for an 8 pm GPAC contest against Dakota Wesleyan.
