(Crete, Nebraska) The Dordt College Defender men's basketball team relinquished a second half lead to the Doane Tigers in Crete, Nebraska on Saturday, November 17 and lost an 86-70 decision in the GPAC opener for both teams.
Dordt steadily built a first half lead up to seven points with 6:11 left in the half on Jordan Vogel dunk to make it 28-21. Doane eventually tied it at 28-28 but the Defenders scored the final three points of the half to lead 35-32.
The second half followed a similar pattern with Dordt expanding the lead to 51-38 with 14:33 left in the game on a Cliff Warner three-point basket.
Five straight points by the hosts after a timeout squelched the momentum. A Kyle Lindbergh basket with 12:06 left seemed to restore order but the Tigers hit two three point baskets in an 8-0 run and cut the gap to 53-51. Doane took a brief lead at the 7:56 mark, going up 56-55. Dordt's last advantage came when Cliff Warner hit a three-pointer and Trevor Wolterstorff converted a free throw to go up 59-56 with 6:27 left. Doane would control the rest of the game.
The Tigers went on an 11-0 run to lead 76-64 with under two minutes left and went on to win 86-70.
Dordt surrendered 29-48 shooting from the floor for 60 percent success and they made 21-25 free throws. Dordt was 26-67 for 39 percent. Dordt had a 34-29 rebounding advantage and committed 17 turnovers to 18 for the hosts. Dordt made 13-18 free throws.
Cliff Warner had 23 points and two assists. Jordan Vogel had 21 points and five rebounds while making 8-10 field goals and 5-7 free throws. Trevor Wolterstorff had 11 points and eight rebounds with four steals.
Doane was led by Nick Reed's 25 points, all in the second half. Shavontae Samuels had 19 points and Jens Scholl ended with 17. Domonique Smith came off the bench and scored 14.
Dordt is 6-1 overall and 0-1 in league play while Doane is 6-0 and 1-0. The Defenders will host Mount Marty on Tuesday, November 20 while Doane faces Briar Cliff that same night.
