(Bellevue, Nebraska) The Dordt College Defender basketball team used a 45-28 second half advantage to pull away from the Bellevue Bruins and take an 83-66 win in Bellevue to open the 2012-13 season.
The match up of teams ranked in the top-13 in the country with Dordt leading 14-8 at the 13:27 mark on a Chris Sievers field goal. A Shawn Keizer three-pointer extended the lead to 17-8. The hosts eventually tied the game at 19-19 and the teams played it closely the rest of the half with the teams deadlocked at 38-38 at the intermission.
Dordt pulled away early in the second half with Cliff Warner scoring the first bucket and Kyle Lindbergh made a free throw. Dordt got up 56-47 when Jordan Vogel scored one of his 11 field goals but the hosts charged back, cutting the gap to 57-53 near the midpoint of the half. A Keizer three-point basket followed by an Austin Katje free throw after a Bellevue technical foul and a lay up by Keizer made it a ten point lead. Bellevue scored five in a row to cut the lead in half but back to back three-pointers by Katje pushed the lead to double figures and Dordt rolled the rest of the way.
Dordt was led by Jordan Vogel as the senior made 11-12 field goals for 22 points and he grabbed six rebounds. Austin Katje converted 17 points and made 4-7 three-point baskets while Chris Sievers added 13 points with seven rebounds. Keizer converted 12 points and Cliff Warner had seven points, five rebounds and five assists. Kyle Lindbergh had seven points, eight rebounds, seven assists, two blocked shots and three steals.
Darius Robinson and Dominique Grant had 23 and 21 points respectively for a Bellevue team that starts the year 0-1 and return three players from a squad that finished last season in the second round of the national tournament. Dordt held a 36-33 rebounding edge.
Dordt will host Jamestown and Valley City State on Friday and Saturday, November 2 and 3 in its next outings.
