Dordt College Men's Basketball vs. Cal Maritime-NAIA National Tournament

March 7, 2012

(College of the Ozarks (Point Lookout, Missouri)) The Dordt College menís basketball team advanced to the second round of the NAIA Division II tournament with a hard fought 63-54 win over the Keelhaulers of Cal-State Maritime in a game played in Point Lookout, Missouri this afternoon.

Both teams got off to a sluggish start and the Defenders found themselves trailing 9-4 with 14:53 to play in the first half. A 13-1 Dordt College run over the next 6 minutes put the Defenders on top 17-10 with 8:49 remaining and the Defenders led by as many as 13 (31-18) before taking the 10 point lead into the half-time break.

"We were pretty nervous to start the game," remarked Dordt Head Coach Ross Douma, "and you could see those jitters early on. We fought through that slow start and made that nice run to get up on them and were able to stretch out the lead early. Half-time came at a bad time for us as it stopped our momentum and we were lethargic to start the second half."

Trailing by 10 (32-22) to start the second half, the Keelhaulers quickly got back in to the ball game with an 8-0 run that including 3 pointers from Greenwell and Johnson to cut it to 2 (32-30) with 17:28 to go.

After a Dordt time-out the Defenders rattled off 6 straight to take a 38-30 lead on a Trevor Wolterstorff basket at 15:49.

The Defenders held a 5 point cushion (46-41) with under 10 minutes to play but a bucket by Johnson followed by a 3 pointer by Houghton tied the game at 46-46 with 8:19 remaining and the two teams were knotted again at 48. At the 5:50 mark, Trevor Wolterstorff got the lead back for Dordt with a basket from the paint in which it looked like he was fouled but no call was given and the Defenders were up 50-48. A bucket by Maritimeís Josh Greenwell knotted it again at 50-50.

Dordt regained the lead (52-50) with a basket from Trevor Wolterstorff at 3:47 and one of two from the charity stripe for Maritimeís Isaiah Johnson made it 52-51 in favor of the Defenders. A pair of made free throws from Dordtís Cliff Warner gave Dordt a 54-51 advantage at 3:19 and two more made free throws by Warner at 2:54 pushed the Defender lead to 5 at 56-51.

Ty Houghton cut the Dordt lead back down to 2 (56-54) with a three pointer at 2:32 and a turnover by Cliff Warner gave the Keelhaulers a chance to tie or take the lead but a 3 pointer rattled out and Warner stepped up on the next possession and knocked down a clutch three to give the Defenders the 59-54 lead with 1:36 to play and a Vogel hook shot with 48 seconds to play made it a three possession game (61-54) and Dordt made a pair of free throws down the stretch to secure the 63-54 win.

Dordt College was led in scoring by Trevor Wolterstorff who had a game high 19 points and 10 rebounds as the junior was 9 of 14 from the floor and 1 of 2 from the free throw line. Cliff Warner added 15 points on 4 of 8 from the floor with 2 of 4 from beyond the arc and 5 of 6 from the charity stripe and the point guard also dished out 3 assists and grabbed 6 boards. Jordan Vogel added a dozen points for the Defenders shooting a perfect 6 of 6 from the floor while snaring 7 boards.

The Defenders dominated the boards, snaring 43 rebounds while limiting Cal-State Maritime to just 20. "We were really determined in getting to the rim and grabbing boards," said Dordt Coach Ross Douma, "and picking up 13 offensive rebounds was big for us." The 13 offensive boards for the Defenders helped to offset the 21 Dordt turnovers as the Keelhaulers only gave up the ball 7 times. "Their quickness and the physicality of the game forced us into a bunch of turnovers but we showed some toughness in never surrendering the lead when they were able to come back and tie us on a couple occasions. That was a tough match up for us and we are pleased to be moving on to the second round on Friday."

Cal-State Maritime was led by Josh Greenwell's 16 point on 7 of 11 from the floor including 1 of 2 from three point range and 1 of 2 from the line. Ty Houghton was the only other Cal-State player in double figures with 13 points on 4 of 10 from the floor with 3 of 9 coming from three point range. Isaiah Moore pulled down 6 rebounds to lead Cal-State and Josh Greenwell led the Keelhaulers with 3 assists.
