Dordt College Men's Basketball vs. St. Xavier--Trinity Christian Classic
November 11, 2011
(Chicago, Illinois) The Dordt Defenders stayed unbeaten Friday against a quality opponent, defeating the St-Xavier Cougars 71-61 after storming back from a 6-point deficit late in the 2nd half.
A 17-2 run that started at the 7:35 mark and ended at the 3:17 mark of the 2nd half propelled Dordt to a lead they would not relinquish. Junior Trevor Wolterstorff scored 8 of his 13 points during that stretch to boost the Defenders, punctuating it with a follow-up tip-in off an Austin Katje miss to push Dordt’s lead to 9.
Near the end of the first half Dordt went flat, going 8:29 without a field goal between the final minutes of the 1st half and the beginning portion of the 2nd. Dordt struggled with turnovers in the game against the Chicagoland opponent, turning the ball over 21 times on the evening. The sloppy offense was due in large part to stifling man-to-man defense by the Cougars throughout. Mark Peters and Brad Karp had 3 steals apiece, and St-Xavier converted 10 fast break points in the game, most of which came off interceptions and easy lay-ups.
The biggest source of frustration for the Defenders came in the form of Roosevelt Green, a junior point guard who harassed Dordt’s ball-handlers all night, applying pressure and forcing bad passes. Green also played 37 of 40 minutes and ran the Cougar offense, doling out 7 assists while pouring in 17 points of his own. Sophomore Brad Karp, the club’s top scorer, led St-Xavier with 18 points.
The Defenders have been better in the 2nd half of games this season, and they continued that trend Friday night. The score was tied at 26 going into the locker room, and trailed by half a dozen midway through the 2nd half, but Dordt flipped a switch late in the game, using a swift transitional attack and strong offensive rebounding to turn the tide. Coach Ross Douma called it a “gritty” performance.
The Defenders only hit on 21% of their 3-pointers in the game, but it was a 3-pointer that really swung the momentum. Junior Cliff Warner, who had all 3 of Dordt’s triples, cashed a trey with 4:42 to go that pushed the Defender lead to 2 possessions at 55-50; they wouldn’t trail by less than 5 for the duration.
Forward Jordan Vogel was the leading point-getter for Dordt College in the game, notching 15 points and grabbing 7 boards. The Defenders also got double-digit outputs from big-man Chris Sievers (14), Warner (13), and Wolterstorff (13). Kyle Lindbergh topped Dordt in rebounding with 12 boards and scored 8 points, narrowly missing a double-double.
Karp (18) and Green (17) were the leading scorers for the Cougars. Senior Ed Gilgenbach also earned 13 points on 5 of 11 shooting. The top rebounder was Karp with 6.
Dordt, now 5-0, finishes their non-conference season with a matinee contest against Trinity Christian on Saturday at 3:00 PM. Their conference season commences on November 19th with a home-game against Doane.
St-Xavier, who drops to 1-3, will play St. Louis Christian at 1 PM Saturday.
