(Crete, Nebraska) The Dordt College Defender men set a single season win record this afternoon, grabbing victory twenty-six with an 86-72 victory over the Doane Tigers in their final regular season contest. Dordt College, the GPAC regular season champion, improves to 26-3 on the year and 17-3 in conference play while the Doane's season draws to a close with an overall mark of 10-19 and 5-15 in the GPAC. Dordt will begin conference play-offs at home next week Wednesday and are the top seed going in to the tournament.
The Defenders got down 10-1 to start the game, finally getting on track with a Trevor Wolterstorff basket at the 16:40 mark. Dordt proceeded to outscore the hosts 41-26 the rest of the half and took a six point lead into the lockerroom.
Doane refused to go away in the second half, tying the score 49-49 with 13:37 left but a 9-0 run by the Defenders after a timeout put the Defenders in the driver's seat and they repeatedly dropped the ball into the post where Chris Sievers went 12-13 from the field, converting 8-9 from the free throw line in the half.
Sievers led all scorers with a career high 34 points and Trevor Wolterstorff was 9-9 with 20 points. Austin Katje completed the double digit scorers with 16 and Wolterstorff had nine rebounds and three assists.
"We defended much better in the second half, especially on the perimeter" said Dordt Head Coach Ross Douma. "We played very intelligently and kept looking for opportunities to feed Chris in the post; Trevor Wolterstorff was very active and attacked the basket well and Austin had a good game as well and I felt like Malone was outstanding for us when he went in. Overall a solid effort for us, nothing flashy but very effective and this game was a testament to how all of our guys are working hard as we showed our depth again this afternoon. Sievers is playing really well and intelligently and all the time that he has put in is really paying off."
