Dordt College Men's Basketball vs. Hastings

February 6, 2012

(Hastings, Nebraska) After trailing most of the first 34 minutes of play, the Defender men took a hard fought 91-81 win on the road against the Hastings Broncos this evening to pick up their 23rd win of the season, improving to 23-3 overall and 14-3 in the Great Plains Athletic Conference.

"We reminded our guys of their roles on this team at half," said Douma, "and they really responded."

Dordt took a brief lead on an Austin Katje basket with just under ten minutes to go in the first half for a 25-23 lead. The advantage was short lived with Hastings eventually getting up 40-32. Dordt responded by cutting the gap to two at 41-39 on a Chris Sievers bucket but the Broncos got the basket back just before the buzzer for a 43-39 lead.

The Defenders were able to cut the lead to one on several occasions in the second half but didn't take the lead until Cliff Warner hit a three-point bucket with 7:56 left in the game for a brief 66-65 advantage.

After four straight points the Broncos were back in the lead with Dane Bacon having a shot to put them up by four on a free throw after making a three-point basket with 6:45 to play in the second half. Bacon missed the free throw and Jordan Vogel scored on a jumper on the next trip down the floor to make it 69-68 and Dordt picked up a steal on the next Bronco possession.

Dordt couldn't convert on the break but ended up finding Shawn Keizer who was trailing on the play and Keizer nailed a 3 to give Dordt the advantage at 71-69 and the Defenders would maintain the lead for the duration of the night.

"This was absolute work this evening," stated Dordt Head Coach Ross Douma. "Hastings took the game to us in the first half shooting 60% from the floor and it was great to see ourselves rally around each other at half time and play much better. Hastings is one of the top offensive teams in the GPAC and will be really good down the road."

Dordt converted 29-53 shots from the floor and made 25-29 free throws including 12-14 in the final five minutes. Hastings converted 32-60 shots, cooling off from a torrid first half when they made 60 percent of their field goal attempts. Hastings had a slight 28-27 rebounding edge.

Dordt was topped by Warner with 23 points. The junior converted 6-9 three-point baskets and he had six assists with two steals. Jordan Vogel ended with 21 points and Chris Sievers had 17. Vogel was 7-8 from the free throw line with 7-15 field goal shooting. Sievers was 6-9 from the floor and 5-5 on free throws. Trevor Wolterstorff had 16 points while making 6-9 field goals and he was perfect on four free throw attempts. Austin Katje added five assists, Shawn Keizer six points with four assists and Kyle Lindbergh had nine rebounds--eight in the second half.

Tobin Reinwald led all players with 27 points.
