Dordt College Men's Basketball vs. Northwestern
February 1, 2012
(Sioux Center, Iowa) A commanding post presence helped the Defenders win the battle between the pair of top 15 teams as they knocked off the visiting Northwestern Raiders by a final of 86-72 after playing to a 38-38 tie in the first half. With the win the Defenders sweep the season series and pick up their 22nd win of the season, improving to 22-3 overall and a league leading 13-3 in GPAC play while the Raiders drop to 17-6 overall and 10-5 in conference.
The first half lived up to its billing as the 5th ranked Defenders and the 13th ranked Red Raiders were neck and neck for 20 minutes in a half that featured 11 ties with the biggest lead of the half was a 5 point advantage that Dordt College held at 23-18 and 27-22 before ending the half knotted at 38-38.
An 11-2 run to open up the second half allowed Dordt College to get some separation, opening up a 9 point lead (49-40) on a Kyle Lindbergh jumper two and a half minutes in to the second half.
"We were not the aggressor like we wanted to be in the first half but we really responded well in the second half after being challenged."
Northwestern got within 6 (53-47) on a pair of Ben Miller free throws with 15:33 to play but 5 straight from Dordt, ending with a Wolterstorff layup at 15:02 gave the Defenders a double digit lead (58-47). The Raiders were able to cut the Dordt advantage down to 9 points three times at 58-49, 60-51 and 65-56 but a pair of Jordan Vogel free throws with ten minutes to play gave the Defenders an 11 point cushion (67-56) and Northwestern would be unable to cut in to the double digit lead for the duration of the contest as the Defenders posted the 86-72 victory.
"Our guys really understand the big picture and that is a luxury we have," remarked Dordt Head Coach Ross Douma in commenting on the unselfish play of his team and their ability to find the hot hand on any given night, "that unselfishness is really underrated by many but it is vitally important."
Dordt College was led by Jordan Vogel who finished with 22 points on 9 of 14 from the floor and 4 of 6 from the free throw line while also grabbing 8 rebounds. Chris Sievers shot 5 of 7 from the floor and 7 of 7 from the charity stripe for 17 points while Kyle Lindbergh picked up a double double with 14 points and a game high 10 rebounds. Cliff Warner had 12 point on 2 of 9 from the field and 7 of 8 on free throws while picking up 2 steals and 1 assist. Trevor Wolterstorff ended with 11 points on 5 of 8 from the floor and 1 of 2 from the line.
