January 28, 2012
(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Defender men avenged an earlier loss to the Briar Cliff and remain unbeaten on their home court as they defeated the Chargers 75-53 in GPAC action in Sioux Center this afternoon. Dordt College improves to 21-3 overall and 12-3 in conference play while the Chargers drop to 16-7 overall and 10-4 in GPAC play
Dordt College scored the first 9 points of the contest to take a 9-0 lead on an Austin Katje layup just two minutes in to the opening half. The Chargers scored 5 straight to get it to 9-5 but a Kyle Lindbergh three pointer gave the Defenders a 12-5 lead. A Tim Loan 3 for Briar Cliff at 13:07 got the visitors within 5 (15-10) but a 6 point Defender run found Dordt up 21-10 with 11:10 to play and the Chargers could get no closer than 9 the rest of the half. Leading 26-16 with 6:24 left in the first half a 10-2 run by the Defenders, capped by a Kyle Lindbergh 3 pointer, gave Dordt an 36-18 lead with 2:17 to play and the Defender lead was 15 (36-21) at half.
The Dordt lead stayed in the mid to high teens over the opening 5 minutes of the second half and a Cliff Warner jumper with 14:53 on the clock gave the Defenders a 21 point cushion. Dordt continued to lead by 21 on a pair of Cliff Warner free throws at 10:46 and the Chargers only got within 20 once over the final 10 minutes and a Warner three at 5:43 gave the Defenders their biggest lead of the game (26) at 67-41. The 22 point Defender win on their home court tied the regular season series between the two schools as the Defenders narrowly fell, 88-83 to the Chargers in Sioux City back on December 17.
"Our guys really extended themselves defensively," said Dordt Head Coach Ross Douma after a game in which his team held the opponent to 53 points, matching the lowest output for the Chargers this season. "We knew we would have to hold Shipley and Murren in check and we accomplished that." Murren finished the game with 6 points while Shipley had 7. "We did a nice job on the boards and for the most part took care of the basketball. We practiced really well the past couple days and it is nice to see the fruits of that labor. We have great kids that care about playing their best and aren't selfish."
Dordt's offense was very balanced as 13 different players got in the scorebook and Jordan Vogel led the Defenders with 14 points. Vogel was 6 of 11 from the floor and 2 of 3 from the free throw line while also grabbing a game high 9 rebounds to go along with 2 blocked shots. As a team, the Defenders were 27-50 (54%) from the floor, with 7 of 15 (46.7%) from three point range and 14 of 24 (58.3%) from the free throw line.
