(Lincoln, Nebraska) The Dordt College Defender men's basketball team dug themselves and early hole and were fighting from behind the entire contest before falling 95-84 to Nebraska Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon in Lincoln, Nebraska, taking their third loss in the last seven outings.
Dordt got 30-14 with 11:05 left in the first half. The Defenders put together a 15-3 run capped by a Trevor Wolterstorff basket to cut the difference to 33-29--the closest Dordt would get in the first half. Wesleyan extended the lead back to double digits but Dordt trimmed the score to 51-45 when Cliff Warner rimmed in a three-point shot just in front of the buzzer.
Dordt had things going its way in the second half, scoring the first five points of the half on an Austin Katje three and a Trevor Wolterstorff dunk. The Prairie Wolves went back up by three on a basket but Warner and Katje hit back to back three point shots for a 56-53 lead. The hosts answered with a pair of two point shots to re-take the lead and a Tyler Wolterstorff free throw tied the game at 57-57 with 14:50 left. Dordt would never be tied or lead again.
In the next eight minutes Dordt lost Chris Sievers and Jordan Vogel to fouls and fell behind by ten at the six minute mark. The Defenders were never able to get closer than seven the rest of the game in falling 95-84.
Dordt surrendered 30-47 shooting from the floor by Wesleyan for 63.8 percent success. The Prairie Wolves also made 27-38 free throws. Dordt converted 27-55 from the floor for 49.1 percent and was 21-27 from the charity stripe. The Defenders held a slight 27-25 rebounding advantage but that was offset by 17 turnovers to 13 for the hosts.
"Moving forward we have to look at ourselves and decide if we are going to be a team that competes on each possession. We got ourselves down and Nebraska Wesleyan was making shots and gaining confidence. This is disappointing after a good defensive performance on Wednesday night," said Dordt College coach Ross Douma.
Jordan Vogel scored a team high 16 points while limited to 22 minutes due to foul trouble. Cliff Warner had 13--11 of them in the first half while Trevor Wolterstorff, Austin Katje and Kyle Lindbergh all had 12. Lindbergh had a team high eight rebounds and Tyler Wolterstorff had six points and five rebounds. Shawn Keizer had three assists to go with seven points and Warner had three assists and three steals.
Eric Jackson had 29 points while making 7-8 three-point shots. Nick Dinan had 16 points and four assists in the win.
Dordt is 10-3 in the league and 19-3 overall while Wesleyan is 8-10 and 4-9.
