Dordt College Men's Basketball vs. Midland

January 14, 2012

(Fremont, Nebraska) A 51 point second half helped Midland overcome an 11 point halftime deficit (36-25) in defeating the Dordt College men's basketball team 76-71 in GPAC play this evening (January 14, 2012). With the win Midland snaps a 3 game losing streak and improves to 11-8 overall and 6-5 in the GPAC while Dordt moves to 18-2 on the year and 9-2 in conference play. Midland's three losses in a row after Christmas came by a slight six points total.

The Defenders withstood the initial defensive surge by Midland to take an 11 point lead at the 20-9 mark with 8:22 left in the first half on a Cliff Warner three-point basket. A Midland timeout slowed the run down, allowing the Warriors to go on an nine point run. The visitors withstood the first half challenge and were able to re-establish the 11 point margin by halftime, closing the final six minutes with a 16-7 run for the 36-25 advantage.

The tone was set for the second half early when Midland outscored Dordt 11-2 in the first 3:08 and the battle was on. The Defenders built the lead to nine again at the 15:41 mark on a pair of Warner free throws making it 45-36. Midland took their first lead of the ball game with just over ten minutes left on a Alex McCleary shot in the lane at 50-49.

Midland controlled the next six minutes, posting a seven point advantage on a three-point shot by Jalen Hueser with 4:05 left. The Defenders found themselves trailing 70-63 but an 8-0 run capped by a Jordan Vogel dunk gave Dordt a one point lead at 71-70 with 00:40 left. Donald Jones scored on the next possession for the Warriors to take back the lead at 72-71 with 00:28 left. Dordt had a chance to regain the lead with under 20 seconds to play but a Katje 3 pointer that looked to be halfway home came out and Dordt was called for a foul on the rebound. Donald Jones made both ends of the one and one to give the Warriors a 74-71 lead with under three seconds to play. Dordt College threw the ball away on the ensuing possession and two more Donald Jones free throws secured the 76-71 victory.

"We were a little soft in the second half, especially in the first 4 minutes," remarked Dordt Head Coach Ross Douma. "We talked about really dominating the area within 15 feet of the basket but they were able to take it to us. We need to collectively be much tougher for 40 minutes. Some guys were tough in the first half while others had a good second half but we need to have everyone competing for the entire game. We had a really solid first half but again they just jumped on us at the start of the second. It was a physical game and we are going to see a lot of that."

Dordt was 26-50 from the floor and 7-14 on three-pointers while converting 12-14 free throws. Midland made 28-62 shots from the floor and 7-21 three-point shots while cashing in on 13-17 free throws. Midland had a 31-30 rebounding edge and Dordt committed 14 turnovers to seven for the Warriors.

Cliff Warner led Dordt with 17 points and nine assists. Austin Katje added 14 with five rebounds and Jordan Vogel had 11 points and seven rebounds. Trevor Wolterstorff converted for ten points and Chris Sievers and Tyler Wolterstorff had six and five points respectively.

Midland was topped by Donald Jones and Jalen Hueser with 14 points each and Ben Imig and Zach Rosenboom had nine a piece.
