Dordt College Men's Basketball vs. Hastings
January 4, 2012
(Sioux Center, Iowa) Stifling defense in the first 10 minutes of the second half allowed the Dordt College Defender men's basketball team turn a 2 point half time lead (48-46) into a 16 point cushion (70-54) as the Defenders held the visiting Broncos to just 8 points in that stretch. With the win Dordt College improves to 16-1 on the year and 8-1 in conference play while Hastings drops to 8-10 and 2-6 in the GPAC.
The Broncos got off to a hot start, making 6 of their first 7 shots to take an early 12 point lead(14-2) on a Jake Marvin layup with 16:50 to play in the first half. The Defenders answered with a Lindbergh layup and back to back 3 pointers by Katje and Lindbergh to cut the Bronco lead to 4 at 14-10 with 15:34 left.
Trailing by 4 (22-18) with 12:23 to play, the Defenders got a jumper from Chris Sievers and a 3 pointer from Shawn Keizer to take their first lead of the game at 23-22. Two straight buckets from behind the arc from Bacon and Marvin got the Broncos on top by 5 (28-23) with 10 minutes to play in the half. Hastings clung to the lead for another 4 minutes until another three from Austin Katje gave the Defenders another one point lead (37-36) with 6 minutes left in the half. The teams then exchanged one point leads until a Cliff Warner 3 pointer gave Dordt a two point edge at 42-40 with 4:17 to play. The Broncos tied the game at 46-46 with a minute left in the half but Dordt's Chris Sievers would hit the final basket of the opening period to give the Defenders the 48-46 halftime advantage.
Dordt picked up the defensive intensity in the second half and went on a 22-8 run in the first 10 minutes and took a 16 point lead on a Sievers' jumper with 10:38 to play. A 9-2 run by the Broncos cut the Dordt lead back down to single digits, 72-63, with 8:10 remaining and the Defenders responded with a 7-0 run to go up 16 (79-63) on a Lindbergh layup.
A pair of made free throws for the Broncos made it 84-72 with 3:41 to play but the Defenders finished the half outscoring the visitors 14-5 to earn the 21 point victory.
Cliff Warner was the high scorer for Dordt College as the point guard went 10 for 10 from the free throw line and added 3 three pointers while dishing out 3 assists. Kyle Lindbergh had a double double for the Defenders with 18 points on 7 of 8 from the floor, including 2 for 2 from beyond the arc and 2 of 2 from the free throw line while also grabbing a game high 11 boards. Austin Katje had 16 points and Trevor Wolterstorff added 13 with 4 assists.
Jake Marvin had 19 points for the Broncos and also grabbed 5 rebounds while Dane Bacon added 13, Dylan Flinn 11 and Tobin Reinwald 10 with a team high 6 rebounds. Nate Olson had 9 points while adding a game high 6 assists.
Dordt finished the night with great shooting numbers, making 62.5% from the floor on 30 of 48, with 10 of 18 (55.6%) from three point range and 28-33 from the free throw line for 84.8%.
The Broncos ended up 28 of 55 from the field for 50.9%, with 7-18 from 3 point range (38.9%) and 14 of 16 from the charity stripe for 87.5%. Dordt College enjoyed a 28-23 edge in rebounding and the Defenders had just 11 turnovers while forcing the Broncos in to 15.
"We didn't have the intensity we needed in the first half but we really picked it up on the defensive side in the second half to create some separation," commented Dordt Head Coach Ross Douma. "We strung together some stops in the last 5 minutes of the first half to get the lead going in to the locker room and really built on that defense going in to the second half. Hastings is one of the top two or three offensive teams in the conference and we had to play well on the defensive side tonight and Kyle (Lindbergh) did a solid job defending Reinwald."
The Defender men at 8-1 are now the only team in the Great Plains Athletics Conference with less than three losses.
