Dordt College Men's Basketball vs. South Dakota Tech-South Dakota Tech Classic

November 25, 2011

(Rapid City, South Dakota) The Dordt College Defender men's basketball team earned their ninth win in a row to start the 2011-2012 season with a 76-55 win over South Dakota School of Mines and Technology on Friday night in Rapid City, South Dakota. The win was Dordt's eighth on the road and continues the Defenders best start in school history.

Dordt got out to a quick start with a 10-2 lead after Cliff Warner hit a three-point basket at the 16:35 mark of the contest. Mines was able to slow the pace of the game up and cut into the lead, eventually taking the lead on a Nathan Jacobson jumper with just over nine minutes left in the half at 17-16. The Hardrockers had one more lead at 19-18 with Dordt taking the lead for good on a three-point basket by Austin Katje at the 8:02 mark. The hosts knotted the score at 21-21 moments later but the Defenders went on a 7-0 run to take control of the game with Trevor Wolterstorff scoring all seven points on a field goal, a field goal and free throws for a three-point play and a pair of free throws. A Cliff Warner basket just before the half pushed the lead to 39-28 margin at the intermission.

The second half had Mines start a little quicker than Dordt but the Defenders eventually responded, pulling away from an 43-35 lead to a 53-35 lead on a 10-0 run. Wolterstorff had another five points in the run and Shawn Keizer hit one of his two three-pointers to cap the run.

Mines never got closer than 14 the rest of the game as Dordt was able to get everyone in uniform into the game.

Dordt was led by Trevor Wolterstorff with 20 points while Cliff Warner and Austin Katje had 13 points each. Shawn Keizer came off the bench to score eight and Jordan Vogel, plagued by foul trouble, scored seven.

Dordt converted 27-54 shots from the floor and 14-16 free throws. The Defenders were outrebounded 35-27 with Kyle Lindbergh and Trevor Wolterstorff each getting six boards in the win. Cliff Warner had a team high nine assists.

"We've battled with eight of our nine games on the road but it's starting to take a toll," said Dordt College coach Ross Douma. "Mines is a team that forces you to play the full shot clock and that makes it hard to get in transition. We had a few spurts where our players made some plays and allowed us a little separation."

Mines was led by reserve Lance Kilburn with 12 and Kyle Doerr had 11 points and eight rebounds.

Dordt is 9-0 and will face Black Hills State on Saturday, November 26 at 4:00 (Central) in Rapid City.
