(Jamestown, North Dakota) Dordt College led start to finish in its non-conference opener with Jamestown (North Dakota) on the road Friday night for a 79-64 win.
Dordt raced to a quick 20-6 lead with Chris Sievers capping a start where Cliff Warner, Shawn Keizer and Kyle Lindbergh all had three-point baskets, Trevor Wolterstorff had a steal and a dunk and Jordan Vogel had a dunk in transition for the fast start.
Jamestown made a run at the Defenders, narrowing the difference to 29-21 at the midpoint of the first half. Dordt was able to extend the difference to 45-31 at the half with Lindbergh getting a basket just before the buzzer for the advantage.
The hosts got the difference to single digits early in the second half with five unanswered points but the Defenders had an answer when Shawn Keizer hit a three and the lead was never single digits again. Keizer hit another late three that extended an 11 lead back to a wider 14 point margin with 3:49 left in the game and the Defenders finished off the 79-64 win.
Dordt was 27-48 from the floor and 19-26 on free throws while converting 6-8 three-point shots. The Defenders limited Jamestown to 22-55 shooting and outrebounded the Jimmies 32-26.
Chris Sievers led the Defenders with 17 points while Keizer, Jordan Vogel and Cliff Warner all had 13 points. Trevor Wolterstorff added 11 and Kyle Lindbergh had a team high 10 rebounds. Warner dished six assists and Keizer had four. Wolterstorff and Warner were both significantly limited by foul trouble in the first half.
"To build our lead with Cliff and Trevor spending so much time on the bench was good to see in the first half. Chris and Jordan worked hard in the post and were productive and Shawn hit those big three point shots. Our defense was steady while our offense was a little jerky at times," said Dordt coach Ross Douma. "We've been working hard on our defense during the pre-season."
Jamestown was paced by Travis Burley's 16 points and Drew Preiner had 13.
Jamestown is now 1-1 while Dordt is 1-0 heading into its game wtih Valley City State on Saturday.
