Dordt College JV Men's Basketball vs. Sioux Falls
November 11, 2010
(Sioux Center, Iowa) By Sam Ekstrom, Dordt College Student Class of 2014
The turnovers and poor shooting were too much to overcome Thursday night as the Defenders dropped to 2-3 with a 70-54 loss at the hands of Sioux Falls.
The Cougars of USF used their sharp-shooting ability to take an early lead and never looked back. Led by Keith Cutler, who finished the game with 23 points, Sioux Falls burst out of the gate to take a 26-8 advantage before Dordt even knew what hit them.
The Defenders did their best to regroup, pulling to within 11 at the break, thanks in large part to Ben Sytsma who hit three first half 3-pointers and had a team high 12 points on the night. Unfortunately, Sytsma’s success did not spread to his teammates. Dordt shot just 29% from 3-point range and 34% overall. They were also plagued by poor free-throw shooting, making just 57% of their attempts.
The Defenders coaching staff implemented a full-court press in the second half, but it was to no avail. The Cougar lead never dipped below nine, and even ballooned to 28 late in the game. Josh Nielsen, 12 points, and Arsenio Richardson, 11, were the other double digit scorers for Sioux Falls.
Forwards James Rylaarsdam and Nick Wilson each contributed 10 points for Dordt.
The Defenders JV plays again on Monday at Norfolk, Neb.
