The Dordt JV Men’s Basketball team was unable to keep their winning streak alive as they lost to the Buena Vista Beavers in a nail biter on Monday night, 59-58. In their final home game of the season, Dordt coughed up a lead in the final minutes due to missed free throws and missed opportunities.
After winning six in a row, Dordt was feeling pretty good with a non-conference game at home. Dordt jumped out to a quick lead, extending it to as many as 11 in the first half. Nick Wilson put his work in for the night with 8 first half points. He finished with 10 on the night. The Defenders played very solid basketball throughout the first half, taking care of the ball and passing well. James Rylaarsdam had a quiet first half only scoring four. Dordt went into the locker room leading 33-26.
Coming out into the second half, Buena Vista quickly pulled within 3 after two quick baskets from Josh Harris. But that was as close as the Beavers got until the last 5 minutes. Rylaarsdam took over the second half for the Defenders, scoring 13 points. He finished with a game-high 17 points. The Defenders stretched their lead out to as many as 14 points in the second half. The lead quickly disintegrated in the final five minutes. Turnovers by the Defenders quickly turned into points for the Beavers. Dustin Kruse who finished with 15 points, including three three-point buckets, led Buena Vista. Dordt had a few late turnovers while trying to waste the clock. Buena Vista was behind by two when Dustin Kruse hit a three to put the Beavers up 55-56 with a minute left.
The Defenders tried to regain the lead, but were unsuccessful and were forced to foul. The Beaver’s Alex Ralston hit one of two free throws putting Buena Vista up by 2. Dordt then proceeded down the court, but were forced into a turnover, then immediately fouling Alex Burgeson who was 4-4 on the night from the charity stripe. Burgeson hit both putting the Beavers up 4. With 9.6 seconds left, Dordt got across half court and called a time out with 6.2 seconds left on the clock. Matt Vande Kamp was immediately fouled coming out of the timeout. He made the first and attempted to miss the second, but the ball missed everything, giving the Beavers the ball back. Dordt would get another chance, as the Beavers were unable to inbound the ball, giving Dordt time to run one more play.
The Defenders inbounded the ball to James Rylaarsdam and Rylaarsdam attacked the basket with. He was fouled going up with 2.7 seconds on the clock, giving him two shots to tie the game. He made the first putting the score at 58-59. He missed the second off of the back rim, Vande Kamp rebounded the ball underneath the hoop and put up one last shot attempt. It was blocked as time expired, game over. Final score 58-59.
