Dordt College JV Men's Basketball vs. Northwestern

November 3, 2010

(Sioux Center, Iowa) By: Sam Ekstrom, Dordt College student, class of 2014

The junior varsity boys dropped the season opener Wednesday to their rivals from Northwestern College. The Dordt squad, consisting of all freshmen, made a late push, but fell by a 70-59 score.

Northwestern came out firing, jumping out to an early 21-11 lead. A fast pace early on, Dordt could not contend with the potent Red Raiders fast break and sharp shooting. The Defenders, on the other hand, were ice cold from the field and had a hard time penetrating Northwestern’s zone defense.

A smart timeout from Coach Ben Van Wyk helped Dordt calm down, and they went on a 13-3 run to tie the game at 24. Important in the stretch was Alex Davelaar, who contributed eight first-half points.

The Red Raiders finished the half strong, however, and took a 34-29 lead into the locker room. Ryan Hoekstra led Northwestern in scoring at the break with 12.

Midway through the 2nd half, the game finally opened up. Northwestern coupled a strong inside game with some timely 3-point shooting to take a 56-41 lead. The Defenders battled back late in the game, pulling within six at one juncture. Dordt guard Lawrence Coleman drove down the lane and scored what appeared to be a good basket which would’ve cut the lead to four, but was whistled for a charge instead. The Red Raiders countered with a three-point play on the other end to take back a 9-point lead. The swing in momentum was too much for the Defenders to overcome and they could not cut the deficit to fewer than seven.

Big man James Rylaarsdam led Dordt with 16 points on the night, followed closely by Matt Vande Kamp who had 14. Hoekstra and his fellow guard Ian Mozeleski had 17 apiece for Northwestern.

The Defenders JV next takes the court on Friday in a Worthington, MN tournament.
