Dordt College Men's Basketball vs. Sioux Falls

(Sioux Falls, South Dakota) The Defenders ended a great run in the GPAC tournament falling to the University of Sioux Falls Cougars 91-77 in the championship game played in Sioux Falls, South Dakota this evening. With the win, the Cougars earn an automatic berth into the NAIA D2 National Tournament. The Cougars advance to the tournament along with the Northwestern Red Raiders who earned a big by securing the GPAC regular season title. Sioux Falls improves to 24-8 with the win while the Defenders drop to 19-12 on the year.

Dordt led early and was clinging to a 20-19 lead after an Austin Katje three-point shot with 8:42 remaining in the half. Sioux Falls scored the next nine points with six of the points coming on back to back buckets by Derek Brown. The Cougars were up 35-30 at the half.

Dordt scored the first bucket of the second half on a Bradley Van Staalduinen put-back but the lead gradually grew to double digits. After getting behind by as many as 18, the Defenders cut the difference down to 70-59 with 8:20 remaining on a Cliff Warner pair of free throws. The difference hovered between 13 and 15 points most of the rest of the game with the final difference holding at 91-77.

Dordt College shot 53.7% (29-54)from the floor and were 22.2% from behind the arc, shooting 2-9 on the game and 0 for 7 in the second half. Dordt got to the free throw line 26, converting on 17 of those shots.

The Cougars ended the night shooting 33 of 68 (48.5%) from the field, including 7 of 19 from 3 point range (36.8%) and 18 of 23 from the charity stripe (78.3%). The Cougars lost the battle of the boards 35 to 32 but were very stingy giving the ball up, committing only 6 turnovers on the night, while the Defenders coughed it up 17 times.

The Defender men were led by freshman Kyle Lindbergh who posted a game high 20 points. Lindbergh was 8 of 11 from the floor and 4 of 9 from the charity stripe and grabbed a team high 7 boards. Cliff Warner had 14 points for Dordt and dished out 3 assists and had a steal. Trevor Wolterstorff and Jordan Vogel each had 10 points with Wolterstorff also pulling down 5 caroms.

Sioux Falls had a very balanced attack with 6 players scoring in double figures. Keith Cutler led the Cougars with 19 points on 6 of 9 from the floor, including 5 of 7 from 3 point range and 2 of 2 from the charity stripe. David Maxwell had 18 points, Ronnell Grant posted 17, Kelly Hubbard added 12 while Derek Brown had 11 and Skyler Bloch contributed 10. Kelly Hubbard pulled down a team high 7 boards while Ronnell Grant handed out 4 assists.
