Dordt College Men's Basketball vs. Briar Cliff

February 2, 2011

(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Briar Cliff Chargers led tipoff to final horn in a 90-77 defeat of the Dordt College Defenders on Wednesday night at the De Witt Gym in Sioux Center, Iowa. The Chargers started fast and kept the Defedners at bay the entire way in winning their 21st game while Dordt slipped to 13-9 for the season.

Briar Cliff raced to a 23-4 lead at the 10:50 mark of the first half before Dordt put together a ten point run to make it 23-14, getting a three-pointer and a two-point field goal from Cliff Warner along with an Austin Katje free throw and a pair of free throws by Chris Van Roekel to make it a single digit contest with 8:29 left in the half. Dordt got as close as eight on a basket by Bradley Van Staalduinen but the Chargers had an answer, scoring the next six points to take a 34-20 lead. The Defenders eventually got the difference to 48-37 with Cliff Warner hitting three free throws after getting fouled on a three-point shot near the end of the first half.

"I was disappointed at how we came out to start the game," said Dordt College coach Ross Douma. "Chris Van Roekel gave us a spark in the first half. He understands that here in February you have opportunities and we had one tonight and didn't capitalize."

The Defenders dented the lead to 56-49 with 15:38 when Dustin Katje hit a three-point shot but the Defenders had little more in the tank, allowing Briar Cliff to get out to a double digit lead and the Chargers held that the rest of the game in posting the 90-77 final.

Briar Cliff was 33-56 from the floor for 59 percent and they converted 7-16 three-point shots while outrebounding Dordt 40-35. Dordt made 24-64 shots from the floor and was 4-19 on three-pointers. Dordt kept themselves in striking distance by converting 25-36 free throws for nearly 70 percent. The Defenders committed 14 turnovers while Briar Cliff was charged with 17.

Dordt was led by Trevor Wolterstorff’s 22 points and Cliff Warner added 12. Jordan Vogel had 1 points and five rebounds while Chris Sievers came off the bench to score nine. Dustin Katje led the Defenders with six rebounds and had five points.

Briar Cliff was paced by Matt Geelan’s 29 points, 13 rebounds and four assists. Jake Shipley and James Larson each had 12 points and Kyle Semprini had 11 points.
