(Seward, Nebraska) The Defenders increased their winning streak to 4 with a 92-72 win over the Concordia Bulldogs in GPAC play this evening. The Defenders move to 2-4 in the GPAC and 9-7 overall while the Bulldogs drop to 4-3 in conference and 10-5 for the year.
A three point basket at the buzzer in the first half cut a six point lead to three and the Dordt College Defenders used that momentum to outscore Concordia in the second half by a 60-37 margin in taking the 20 point win.
Dordt led briefly in the first half but relinquished the advantage with just under 12 minutes and saw Concordia get in front by as many as six. With 00:38 left in the half Dordt got the possession while trailing 35-29. Bobby Sherwood stepped up and made his second three-pointer of the half just in front of the buzzer to cut the gap to 35-32.
The Defenders scored the first 11 points of the second half on a free throw, two point and three point field goal by Trevor Wolterstorff; a three-point basket by Austin Katje; and a two-point basket by Jordan Vogel. From there the Defenders built a double digit lead that they never relinquished on a three-point shot by Katje with 12:04 left. Concordia couldn't cut the gap to single digits and resorted to fouling to try to extend the game but the Defenders converted 34-42 free throws for the game and won the rare, large margin game in conference play.
Wolterstorff scored 30 and was 13-15 from the free throw line with seven rebounds. Cliff Warner had 16 points, converting 14-17 free throws with five rebounds and four assists. Austin Katje converted 11 points and with six rebounds and Jordan Vogel had eight points and nine rebounds. Bobby Sherwood added eight and Chris Sievers knocked down six points.
Sam Huebner scored 17 and grabbed seven rebounds to lead Concordia and TJ Todd scored 13 in a reserve role.
"Not in our wildest dreams did we think we could come to Seward and pick up a win with this big of a margin," said Dordt Head Coach Ross Douma. "We had great energy in the second half and did a good job getting to the free throw line early and Cliff (Warner) and Wolterstorff really cashed in there. Cliff did a nice job in the second half getting into the gut of their defense and that got us some shots from good places on the floor."
