Dordt College Men's Basketball vs. Mayville State
December 30, 2010
(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt College Defenders took their second win of the Defender Gold Club Christmas Classic on Thursday, December 30 with a 74-59 win over the Mayville State Comets in Sioux Center, Iowa. The win was a reversal of an overtime decision won by the Comets on October 29 by 99-98 margin.
The Defenders took the lead for good at the 11:14 mark on a basket by Jordan Vogel. The Defenders used that basket as part of a 12-2 run that turned an early deficit into a 26-16 lead. Dordt actually built the lead to 13 on a pair of free throws by Trevor Wolterstorff at the 1:26 mark only to have Mayville State score the next five points. The Defenders got the lead back to ten when Vogel tipped in a missed shot just in front of the buzzer to make the halftime score 37-27.
The Defenders looked like they might blow the game open with a 59-43 lead at the midpoint of the second half but the Comets put the pressure on with a charge that got them to within 62-57 on a Shovontae Samuels basket at the 5:48 mark. The visitors would get no closer as the Defenders got a bucket by Vogel followed by a pair of Kyle Lindbergh free throws at the 3:46 mark and raced away with another eight points in a row for a 74-57 lead and the eventual 74-59 final.
Dordt struggled through a sub-par shooting night where they made 25-63 shots for 39.7 percent but they did convert 9-23 three-point shots and 15-22 free throws. Mayville State countered with a 24-66 night and 7-28 three-point shooting to go with 4-7 free throws. Dordt outrebounded the Comets 48-38 and turned the ball over 12 times to 10 turnovers for the Dakota Athletic Conference member.
