Dordt College Men's Basketball vs. Grace

(Sioux Center, Iowa) Dordt College opened up their play in the Defender Gold Club Classic by defeating Grace (MI) 85-63 in non-conference play to improve to 6-7 on the year.
The Defenders fell behind early to the number one ranked team in the NCCAA by a 19-13 margin with 12:34 left to go in the first half. The Defenders fought back to tie the game at 19-19 on free throws by Chris Van Roekel, and back to back baskets by Jordan Vogel, the second one coming with 9:35 left in the half. Grace threatened to stretch the lead out again and were up 27-24 with 5:56 left in the half when Allen Durham knocked down a basket. Dordt proceeded to go on a 10-0 run to take a lead they would never relinquish. Trevor Wolterstorff converted a basket and Vogel gave Dordt the lead at the 4:31 mark. Baskets by Wolterstorff and Bradley Van Staalduinen extended the lead to 32-27 and a Wolterstorff basket with 2:28 left in the half capped the run. The Defenders then finished the half with a flurry as Vogel converted a on a dunk with 00:27 left and Wolterstorff scored before time expired on an assist by Bobby Sherwood to lead 42-33.
The Defenders took a double digit lead for good with 18:16 left on a Wolterstorff free throw and extended the lead to 63-43 with 11:01 left in the game. Grace as able to make one charge at the Defenders, cutting the lead to 66-53 but five straight points by Dustin Katje got the lead back to 18 and the Defenders coasted in for the 85-63 win.
Dordt was 36-68 from the floor for 52.9 percent and they made 6-11 free throws and 7-21 three-pointers. Grace was limited to 26-71 shooting and was a perfect 8-8 on free throws. Grace held a 43-37 rebounding edge but they turned the ball over 18 times to 12 times for the Defenders.
Dordt was led by Jordan Vogel as he converted all eight of his field goal attempts for 16 points. Wolterstorff added 15 and Bradley Van Staalduinen added 12. Kyle Lindbergh had a team high seven rebounds to go with four assists, two blocks and two steals. Wotlerstorff shared team honors in assists with Lindbergh and had five rebounds and a steal to go with nine point.
Grace, now 14-5 for the season, got 24 points and 16 rebounds from Allen Durham with Cory Jamieson and Ryan Krombeen each had eight points.
"Grace is a very good basketball team that has beaten both Hope and Calvin this season and we knew we would have to play well to beat them," remarked Dordt Head Coach Ross Douma, "we did a really good job in transition this evening and did a better job of taking care of the basketball. We shot the ball well tonight and we are more confident and optimistic with where we are as a team right now and we got good contributions from a lot of guys this evening."
Dordt improves to 6-7 with the win.
Dordt will play host to Mayville State at 4:00 pm on Thursday, December 30 to close out the Defender Gold Club Classic held in Sioux Center, Iowa.
