(Sioux City, Iowa) A frantic 15-point comeback by the Dordt College Defenders in the closing minutes of their game with Morningside in Sioux City, Iowa, was squashed when the Mustangs went the length of the floor for a three-point basket at the buzzer to take a final of 82-79.
Dordt led much of the first half and was up 40-36 at the half after Austin Katje knocked down three free throws with half a second left in the period. The free throws capped a 13 point first half for Katje.
Dordt pushed out to a seven point lead early in the second half on a Chris Sievers basket. Morningside would dominate the next minutes, getting in front 71-56 with 5:38 left in the game. During that time Dordt charged back to within one on a four-point play by Austin Vande Vegte followed by a three-point basket by the sophomore from Rock Valley. The lead then built to the 71-56 difference on a 14 point run by the hosts.
The Defenders got back to within nine but were still down by that margin with 3:14 left at 77-68. Dordt scored the next seven points on a three-pointer by Austin Katje and baskets by Trevor Wolterstorff and Chris Sievers. Dordt eventually tied it on a pair of free throws by VandeVegte with :05.4 left on the clock.
