Dordt College Men's Basketball vs. William Penn

(Sioux Center, Iowa) Dordt College scorched the nets in the first half and went on to a 106-97 win over William Penn, snapping the Statesmen's three game winning streak. With the victory the Defenders go into the Thanksgiving break over .500 with a 5-4 record.

Dordt opened up the game making the first five points and held eight point leads on two occasions in the half. Back to back dunks by Chris Sievers pushed the Defender lead to 11 at 30-19 with 8:41 to go in the half and an Austin Katje lay-up extended the Dordt lead to 17 at 38-21. William Penn answered with and eight point run to cut the lead down to nine at 38-29 with 4:32 to go in the opening half. Austin Katje nailed a three pointer to end the drought and put Dordt back up by a dozen. Sievers's fourth dunk of the half put Dordt up by 15 at 48-33 with 3:05 to play and the Defenders took an 18 point lead into the locker room when Bobby Sherwood made a 4 point play with 12 seconds to go.

Dordt spent most of the first half with a shooting percentage in the mid 70s and finished the first half making 20-29 for 69% and shot 12-14 from the charity stripe for 85.7%.

In the second half Dordt was able to push the lead to 19 on an Austin Katje lay-up with 17:45 to go and were still up 18 points at 67-49 at the 15:44 mark. The Statesmen answered with a 12-3 run to cut the gap down to nine at 70-61 with 11:19 on the clock. The Defenders showed their mettle by responding with a 14 point run of their own and found themselves up 23 at 84-61 with 6:41 remaining. The Statesmen did not go away, however, and scored on 10 of 11 possessions and got to within six on a Boris Bobic three-pointer with 32 seconds to go. With 24 seconds to go Shawn Keizer made one of two free throws to give Dordt a seven point lead. On William Penn's next possession, Dordt's Kyle Lindbergh came up with a key blocked shot and TJ Malone gained possession of the ball to seal the upset win for Dordt. William Penn scored on 16 of their last 18 possessions to narrow the gap.

Dordt freshmen, Austin Katje, led the Defenders with 21 points while Chris Sievers added 19 and Shawn Keizer had 17. Rounding out the double digit scorers for Dordt were TJ Malone with 12 and Kyle Lindbergh with 10. Dordt's TJ Malone and Austin Katje shared a game high 8 rebounds apiece.

William Penn's Huzie Hambrite led all scorers with 31, including a perfect 9 of 9 from the charity stripe.

The Defenders turned the ball over 24 times in the contest while the Statesmen lost possession on 15 occasions. Dordt held a slim margin in rebounds, pulling down 41 boards to the Statesmem's 39.

Dordt's next contest will be a home game against the Northwestern Red Raiders on Wednesday, December 1 at 8 pm.
