Dordt College Men's Basketball vs. Mayville State

October 29, 2010

(Mayville, North Dakota) The Dordt College Defender men’s basketball team lost a high-scoring, overtime battle with Mayville State on the road by a 99-98 on Friday afternoon in Mayville, North Dakota. Both teams had double digit leads in the contest, Mayville State in the first half and Dordt in the second half before the two teams were deadlocked at 90-90 at the end of regulation. Dordt had two chances to win it at the end of regulation and overtime but couldn’t get the shots to drop.

The Comets, playing their third game of the season, jumped to a 30-19 lead midway through the first half but the Defenders responded with a five point run to cut the lead down and eventually led 44-38 on an Austin Katje long two-point basket near the end of the first half.

Dordt scored the first two buckets of the second half to go up 48-38. Mayville State called a timeout and got themselves back in the game with seven unanswered points. Dordt continued to hold the lead in the second half, still leading 86-80 with under two minutes to go. The Comets kept coming on behind Shavantae Samuels and took the lead at 88-87 on a three-pointer by Adam Edwards. After a Dordt turnover and foul, Samuels extended the lead to 90-87 but Trevor Wolterstorff tied the game on a three-point shot from the top of the key with :02.1 left in the game.

The two teams each called a timeout with Mayville State throwing the ball away untouched under its basket and Dordt ran a play to win it but Wolterstorff’s shot from the right baseline was off the mark and Kyle Lindbergh’s tip attempt rimmed out.

Dordt never led in the overtime, managing to tie it at 95-95 on a Shawn Keizer two-pointer. Chris Sievers and Jordan Vogel each made one shot in the extra frame and Dordt trailed 99-98 with under ten seconds left in the session.

Mayville State’s David Slezak missed a pair of free throws and Dordt got the ball into the frontcourt but a 23-foot jumper by Austin Katje at the buzzer was just short.

Dordt was 39-73 from the floor but just 14-22 on free throws. The Defenders had a 44-41 rebounding edge but surrendered 17 offensive rebounds and turned the ball over 24 times. Mayville State was 36-88 from the floor.

Wolterstorff had 23 points, eight rebounds, eight assists, one block and one steal in 42 minutes of action. Austin Katje had 19 points and six rebounds and made 4-8 three-pointers. Jordan Vogel had 17 points and six rebounds with Shawn Keizer and Chris Sievers each contributing 13 points.

Mayville State was led by Samuels with 37 points, eight rebounds, six assists and five steals in 38 minutes. Wiley Jiles added 15 points.
