(Sioux Center, Iowa) A Logan Kingma three-pointer at the buzzer gave the Dordt College Defender men's basketball team a 76-73 win over Dakota Wesleyan in Great Plains Athletic Conference basketball.
Dordt withstood a late comeback by the Tigers to beat their second ranked opponent of the season. Wesleyan was voted the #4 team in the pre-season balloting.
Dordt led much of the game turning a 28-25 deficit with 8:35 left in the first half into a 33-28 lead on eight straigh points, the last two buckets coming on a Jordan Vogel basket and a Trevor Wolterstorff counter. The Defenders went into the locker room up 40-38.
The second half was tight through out with Dordt holding a five point lead at 47-42 on a three-point play by Wolterstorff. From there the games settled into a posession by possession battle with a tie coming at 54-54 at the 12:46 mark on a Preston Broughton two-pointer.
Ties ensued at 58, 60, 62, 63 and 65 before a five point run on a three by Kingma and a pair of free throws by Michael Eekhoff made it 70-65 with 4:44 left. A pair of Broughton free throws made it 70-67 at the 3:44 mark and a free throw by Bo LaCroix for Wesleyan made it 70-68 with 00:34 left.
Kingma made two free tries to extend the lead to 72-68 but LaCroix again had an answer-a two point basket with 00:21 left to cut it to 72-70. Michael Eekhoff made one of two free throws with 00:17 left in the game for a 73-70 lead.
Wesleyan worked the ball around and got an open three-pointer by Darrin Dorsey for a 73-73 tie with :04.6 left. Dordt inbounded to Logan Kingma who dribbled past half court and let fly with a runner that banked in with the clock expiring with the ball in flight for the 76-73 win.
Dordt was 25-67 from the floor for 37.3 percent and made 19-25 free throws for 76 percent. Wesleyan was 28-65 for 43.1 percent and 12-18 on free throws. Dordt won the rebounding battle 46-40 with both teams turning it over 15 times.
Dordt was led by Trevor Wolterstorff's 21 points and 12 rebounds while Michael Eekhoff had 18 points and seven rebounds with seven assists. Logan Kingma had 14 points and six rebounds with all of his points coming in the second half. Shawn Keizer had eight points and six rebounds with Brandon Oldenkamp adding seven points and nine rebounds.
Dakota Wesleyan was led by Brady Wiebe and Preston Broughton each with 19. Wiebe had 12 rebounds and Broughton 10 with Darrin Dorsey scoring 16 with nine rebounds and five assists.
Dordt is now 4-1 and 1-0 in the GPAC while Dakota Wesleyan is 4-2 and 0-1. Dordt will face William Penn on Tuesday night in Oskaloosa, Iowa.
