(Sioux Center, Iowa) The sixth seeded Dordt College Defenders got their 20th win of the season by beating the 11th seed Dana Vikings 89-69 to move on to a quarterfinal game against the 3rd seeded Hasting Broncos on Thursday evening. The Defender men improve to 20-9 on the season.
The Dana Vikings scored on their opening possession of the ball game and held the lead on Dordt for the opening 10 minutes of action with their biggest lead coming with 16:46 to play at 13-7. The two teams were tied at 22 and again at 25 with 9:36 on the clock. Dordt opened up a 4 point lead at 29-25 but the Vikings scored 5 straight to take a 1 point lead at 30-29 with 7:53 to go. Dordt answered back with 6 straight points capped by a Shawn Keizer 3 pointer to give the Defenders a 5 point cushion at 35-30. Dordt pushed the lead to 8 at 40-32 with 4:28 to go on a Dustin Katje layup. A Kingma layup with 23 seconds left gave Dordt their biggest lead of the half at 11 which they took into the break up 50-39.
On three separate occasions, Dana was able to put a very small dent in the Dordt lead, getting it down to 9 points, with the last nine point gap coming at 57-48 with 13:43 to play. Dordt then went on an 8 point running, opening up a 17 point lead at 65-48 on a Dustin Katje 3 pointer. Dordt opened the lead to as many as 24 at 81-57 but Dana made 10 straight to cut the lead to 14 at 81-67 with 3:27 to play. Dordt then outscored Dana 8-2 over the final three and a half minutes to coast in for the 89-69 win.
"The difference in our team over the last 6 weeks has been our seniors," said Dordt Head Coach Ross Douma. "Those guys have always been good players but over the last month and a half they have become great leaders and that has been the key to our success. We did a nice job getting to the foul line tonight, shooting 41 free throws and Michael (Eekhoff) did a nice job getting to the basket and distributing for us." The Defender men are 11-1 in their last 12 games.
Michael Eekhoff and Dustin Katje both finished with 16 points for Dordt with Eekhoff also adding 8 rebounds, 7 assists and 3 steals. Logan Kingmas had 14 points and 8 rebounds and Jordan Vogel added 11 to go with a game high 10 rebounds for the double double. Brandon Oldenkamp tossed in 10 points.
Dana was lead by AJ Arkfeld who lead all scorers with 17 points. Danny Petersen and Alex McCleary each had 12 and Taylor Oltjenbruns had 11 points and a team high 8 rebounds.
Dordt held a large 48-34 rebounding margin over the Vikings and shot 47.4% from the floor while Dana shot 36.7%. The two teams combined for 53 fouls and 70 free throw attempts with Dordt going 27-41 from the charity stripe with Dana shooting 20-29.
