Dordt College Men's Basketball vs. Briar Cliff

(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt College Defender men's basketball team lost a 76-75 decision to the Briar Cliff Chargers on Wednesday night at the De Witt Gym. The Defenders had to fight through foul trouble and a deficit most of the contest to give themselves a chance in the second meeting of the two teams.

Dordt led 2-0 on a Trevor Wolterstorff basket but the Chargers took the lead at 4-2 and wouldn't relinquish it until the final minute of regulation.

Dordt forced a tie at 10-10 with 15:11 left in the half on a Michael Eekhoff basket. Dordt wouldn't score again until it was 19-10 at the 12:00 mark of the half. With Michael Eekhoff on the bench with three fouls, the Defenders cut the lead to 38-33 at the half.

"Briar Cliff was the aggressor at the start and we didn't respond well," said Dordt College coach Ross Douma.

Dordt dropped behind by as many as 55-41 with 12:55 left in the game and lost Eekhoff to fouls with 9:09 left and the score at 59-52 favoring Briar Cliff. Dordt got to within three at the 7:45 mark on a pair of Wolterstorff free throws and got the lead to two at 72-70 with a Wolterstorff lay in with 2:46 left. After a pair of missed shots by the Chargers Dordt gathered in a rebound and Dustin Katje made both free throws as he was fouled with 2:19 left. A Matt Geelan basket gave the Chargers the lead back at the 1:13 mark only to have Brandon Oldenkamp knock down a three-pointer with 00:44 left. It was Geelan again who made the basket to give Briar Cliff the lead with :24 left and Dordt turned it over on the next possession.

Down by one Dordt was forced to foul and sent Kyle Semprini to the free throw line with :08 left in the game. Semprini missed both free throws with a one point lead and Dordt went the length of the court missing a baseline jumper by Kingma and a putback by Oldenkamp was off the mark preserving the win for Briar Cliff.

"If they made a free throw we were going to call timeout," said Douma. "If they didn't we felt we could get a good shot to win it. We did, the shots just didn't go."

The Chargers made 31-61 shots for 50.8 percent and they were 6-17 on three-pointers. Dordt was 24-47 from the floor and 5-9 on three-pointers whilc converting 22-30 free throws. Dordt was outrebounded 32-29 and both teams committed 14 turnovers. Dordt allowed nine offensive rebounds in the first half and Briar Cliff ended wtih 13 for the game.

"We didn't keep them off the boards and we didn't do a great job of identifying shooters," said Douma.

Trevor Wolterstorff had 25 points on 7-13 shooting and 11-12 free throws to pace all scores. Brandon Oldenkamp had 11 points and Logan Kingam nine. Michael Eekhoff scored eight in 15 minutes of playing time and Jordan Vogel had seve in a resreve role.

"With Michael out with fouls we had to adapt and our players did that well," said Douma. "Trevor did a nice job of getting to the free throw line."

Briar Cliff was led by James Larson with 20 points on 9-12 shooting and Chase Vander Feen scored 19. Matt Geelan added 14 with four assists and Vander Feen had a game high five assits.

Dordt is now 14-9 overall and 6-8 in the league while Briar Cliff is 18-6 overall and 9-4 in the conference.

Dordt travels to Midland Lutheran on Saturday for a 4:00 game against the Warriors in Fremont, Nebraska.

"We have to take care of business down the stretch," said Douma. "We have to get hungry and get it going again. We expect a very tough game in Fremont."
