(Blair, Nebraska) Conference wins on the road do not come easily in the GPAC and this contest would be no exception as Dordt defeated a pesky Dana College squad 79-77 to improve to 12-8 overall and 4-7 in GPAC play. With the loss the Vikings fall to 2-8 in conference and 6-14 overall.

The first half of the game was a see-saw battle that included 6 ties and neither team opening up a lead of greater than 4 points over the first 20 minutes. A tip in basket by Shawn Keizer gave Dordt a 4 point lead, it's largest of the half, with the score 10-6 at the 16:41 mark. Dana's biggest margin of the first half was a 3 point cushion coming with 3:43 on the clock when a pair of Alex McCleary free throws made the score 33-30. Dordt proceeded to score the next 5 points on a Jordan Vogel jumper and a 3 pointer by Brandon Oldenkamp to give the Defenders a 35-33 lead at 2:55. Blake Maaske tied the game at 35 all with 1:10 to go in the half on a made lay-up and finished the old-fashioned 3 pointer to give the Vikings a 1 point lead at 36-35. Shawn Keizer knocked in one of his seven 3 pointers on the night with 42 seconds to go to give Dordt the 2 point lead that they would carry into half-time at 38-36.

Shawn Keizer started the second half the same way he finished the first with another 3 pointer coming at 18:51 to give Dordt a 5 point lead at 41-36. With 11:34 remaining a Michael Eekhoff jumper gave Dordt an 8 point lead at 56-48 but that was answered by a Brandl 3 ball by the Vikings to cut the lead to 5. Dustin Katje responded with a three for Dordt to push the gap back to 8 point, but Brandl fired home 2 more 3 pointers to cut the Defender lead to 2 at 59-57 with 10:48 remaining.

A pair of Jordan Vogel free throws at 4:24 made the score 76-65, giving Dordt their biggest lead of the night at 11 points, but no win seems to come easy in the GPAC and the Vikings, who refused to fade, responded by rattling off the next nine points and cut the Dordt lead down to 2 at 76-74 with 1:04 to go. Dordt had a chance to extend the lead back to 4 but a missed lay-up by the Defenders gave Dana a chance to tie the ball game. With 22 seconds remaining PJ Mallette attacked the Dordt basket but Dordt's Michael Eekhoff came up with a clutch blocked shot, secured the ball and was fouled. With 20 seconds left Eekhoff calmly knocked home both free throws to make it a two possession game at 78-74. Arkfeld missed a 3 pointer for Dana with 9 seconds showing and Brandon Oldenkamp grabbed the rebound and was fouled. Oldenkamp made the first free throw and missed the second and a 3 pointer at the buzzer by Brandl ended the game at 79-77 in favor of the Defenders.

The two teams shot an identical 27-59 from the field with Dordt making one more 3 pointer and one more free throw than the Vikings. The rest of the stats were very close as well with Dana narrowly outrebounding Dordt 37-32, while Dordt won the steal category 10-8. Dana coughed the ball up 15 times to the Defenders 14 turnovers and both teams committed 15 fouls; the Defenders dished out 18 assists and Dana had 15.

"I really felt like our guys did a great job competing today and Dana played very well," remarked Dordt Head Coach Ross Douma. "It was great to see Keizer get going. He is playing more relaxed and was an impressive 7 of 11 from 3 point range. Trevor (Wolterstorff) played a great game in the second half and Eekhoff was very good with the ball over the final 5 minutes. Oldenkamp did a nice job provide a spark coming off the bench. We did move well inside in the first half which put some pressure on our perimeter guys to make shots. Now we will take one practice and one game at a time as we face 3 key opponents at home over the next three contests. I am pleased with where we are at right now as a team, I think we are playing hard and with confidence and we are much tougher physically and mentally than we were earlier this season."

Dordt's Shawn Keizer had a game high 24 points with 21 of those coming on 7 made 3 pointers, Keizer also dished out 4 assists and had 2 steals. Michael Eekhoff added 16 for the Defenders while also pulling down 6 boards and giving 2 assists. Trevor Wolterstorff had 11 points, 3 assists 5 rebounds and a steal and Brandon Oldenkamp rounded out the double digit scorers with 10 points and 6 rebounds.

Jake Brandl and PJ Mallette both had 18 points for Dana and Taylor Oltjenbruns lead all players with 13 rebounds.
