Dordt College Men's Basketball vs. Mount Marty

(Yankton, South Dakota) The Dordt College Defender men's basketball team led start to finish in their road test at the Mount Marty Lancers on Wednesday night, January 20 in Yankton, South Dakota and took their third win of the conference season in the process with a 73-64 win over the Lancers.
Dordt started fast with back to back three-pointers from Logan Kingma to take a 6-0 lead. The Defenders eventually pulled out to a 16-8 lead on free throws by Chris Sievers with just over 14 minutes left in the first half. Mount Marty scored the next seven points over the next four minutes and cut the deficit to 16-15 near the mid point of the first half.
Dordt would outscore the Lancers 23-10 over the final ten minutes of the half with Michael Eekhoff hitting a lay up just in front of the halftime buzzer for a 39-25 halftime lead.
The Lancers cut into the lead immediately in the second half and were down 41-36 after a Jared Wall basket. Dordt ran the difference back up to as many as 13 in the half but could never land the knock out punch, maintaining at least a seven point lead the entire second half before winning 73-64.
dordt made 26-62 shots from the floor for 41.9 percent while the hosts made 18-54 shots for 33.3 percent. Dordt got outrebounded 45-37 but forced 16 turnovers--12 of them by steal and gave the ball up just five times. The two teams shot nearly 60 free throws combined with Mount Marty going 24-33 and Dordt converted 16-26.
Michael Eekhoff scored 26 on 11-16 shooting from the floor and he had three assists. Logan Kingma had 16 points and four rebounds with Trevor Wolterstorff scoring seven with ten rebounds, three assists and three steals. Dustin Katje got credit for four assists and two steals while Brandon Oldenkamp and Chris Sievers each had five points in reserve roles.
"We had a good start and got the game up and down in the first half," said Dordt College coach Ross Douma. "We tried to get gaps for Michael (Eekhoff) to be able to attack and he was great. Our seniors did a good job of making sure everyone was ready to play in this game. We got good bench play, that continues to improve and come along."
The Lancers got 16 points and 11 rebounds from Jared Wall with five blocked shots and he made 6-9 field goals.
Dordt is 11-8 overall and 3-7 in the GPAC while Mount Marty slides to 4-16 overall and 2-8 in the conference. Dordt is scheduled to face Dana in Blair, Nebraska on Saturday, January 23.
