Dordt College Men's Basketball vs. Hastings

(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt College Defender men's basketball team got a hard-earned, tense win over the Hastings College Broncos on Saturday afternoon at the De Witt Gym in Sioux Center, Iowa. The Defenders led start to finish and never relinquished the lead in winning 74-67.
The two teams traded two buckets each before back to back three-pointers by Logan Kingma made it 10-4 at the 16:25 mark. Dordt extended the lead after hastings had cut it down to 22-18 on a three-point basket by Shawn Keizer at the 7:10 mark. Six points in a row later in the half gave the Defenders an 11 point lead with 3:38 left and they were up 33-22 after a Trevor Wolterstorff tip in at the 2:11 mark. Hastings closed the gap to six on a Waid Vontz basket at the 1:03 mark and that's how the half ended.
Dordt started strong in the second half and stretched the difference to double digits and were still up by nine, 56-47 with 10:39 left in the game, when Michael Eekhoff picked up his fourth foul and was forced to leave the game.
From there Hastings cut the lead down to five but Dordt had answers to get it back to 61-52 with 6:49 left in the game on a Jordan Vogel basket. and a Wolterstorff free throw. Hastings did mount one last charge and came back to tie it at 65-65 on a Jeremiah Slough basket at the 2:43 mark. Again Dordt had an answer. Vogel made one of two free throws and the Dordt defense got a stop. Michael Eekhoff made a pull up 15-foot rainmaker at the 1:21 mark to make it 68-65. Another Dordt defensive stop gave them the ball and Logan Kingam proceeded to make four straight free throws and Brandon Oldenkamp had one as the Defender went on to win by the seven point margin.
Dordt was 25-55 from the floor and 5-19 on three pointers for 45.5 and 26.3 percent respectively. Dordt also converted 19-27 free throws and won the rebounding battle 45-32. Dordt did turn the ball over 21 times to 15 for the Broncos. Hastings was 23-61 from the floor for 37.7 percent and 6-28 on three-pointers.
Dordt was paced by Jordan Vogel with 19 points and nine rebounds while making 6-9 shots from the floor. Logan Kingma was 4-8 from the floor and 7-8 on free throws for 18 points with five rebounds. Wolterstorff had 14 points and seven rebounds while Michael Eekhoff had ten points and three assists. Brandon Oldenkamp grabbed nine rebounds and Justin Van Kooten got credit for three steals.
"Our guys were rewarded for their hard work," said Dordt coach Ross Douma. "Jordan Vogel played a great game and Logan Kingma made his free throws at the end. We had everyone working so hard. Michael Eekhoff made a big shot for us when we were up one and we got some defensive stops when we needed them."
Hastings got 23 points from Vontz and 18 points and eight rebounds from Jeremiah Slough to go with three assists and three steals.
Dordt is now 10-8 overall and 2-7 in the league while Hastings is 15-5 overall and 6-3 in the conference. Hastings had won six in a row coming into the game and lost for the first time since an 82-77 setback to Briar Cliff. Dordt will face Mount Marty in Yankton, South Dakota on Wednesday night, January 20.
