(Sioux Center, Iowa) A 19 point second half difference was too much for the Dordt College Defender men’s basketball team to overcome on Saturday, January 9 in their 83-75 loss to the Concordia Bulldogs in conference play in Sioux Center, Iowa. The Defenders closed to within four with just over 2:00 minutes left but the Seward, Nebraska based school held on for the eight point win, making their free throws to seal the win.
Dordt started fast and built a 20-14 advantage with 9:26 left in the first half. A basket by Sam Huebner for the Bulldogs and then back to back three-pointers by Ryan Shrum pushed Concordia in front just a little over a minute later and the Bulldogs never trailed again. Dordt tied the game at 22-22 on a Chris Sievers basket with 6:54 left in the half but Concordia outscored Dordt 16-7 for the rest of the half and had a 38-29 halftime lead.
Dordt struggled to stop the Bulldogs in the early minutes of the second half and found themselves down 53-34 at the 14:05 mark of the game. Dordt was still down by 18 with 9:00 left at 62-44. A five point run by the Defenders got the difference to 13 and the Defenders hung kept within striking distance when they made one final charge with 3:39 left.
Michael Eekhoff buried a three-pointer with 3:27 left, his only three-point attempt in a 36 point barrage and he followed with a lay-up and two free throws to get the difference to 73-66 with 2:25 left. A jumper by Eekhoff in the paint got the difference to down to six. After Porter Birtell made a free throw Logan Kingma knocked down a long three with 2:04 left for a 75-71 difference but that is as close as the Defenders got with Concordia scoring six in a row—four of them on free throws and they held on to win 83-75.
Dordt was 29-63 for 46 percent and 5-13 on three-point shots. The hosts struggled at the free throw line where they made 12-20 and they were outrebounded 38-29. Concordia was 26-52 from the floor and 7-20 on three-pointers with a 24-29 free throw night.
Michael Eekhoff led all players with 36 points while making 16-23 shots and grabbed six rebounds. Longa Kingma was 9-20 from the floor and had 25 poitns with nine rebounds. Trevor Wolterstorff had eight points on a night when Dordt couldn’t find offensive balance.
Concordia was led by Shrum’s 20 points and he made 6-7 three-pointers and converted 2-3 free throws. Porter Birtell had 17 points and nine rebounds with Ryan Railey scoring 15 points.
Dordt is now 9-6 overall and 1-5 in the league with Concordia improving to 11-6 overall and 6-2 in the conference.
Dordt will face Morningside on Monday, January 11 in Sioux City at 8:00.
