Dordt College Men's Basketball vs. Portland Bible

(Portland, Oregon) The Dordt College Defender men's basketball team earned an 82-73 win over Portland Bible College in Portland, Oregon on the final day of 2009 to snap a four game losing streak and improve to 8-5 for the season. The Defenders pulled away from a tie near the midpoint of the first half to take control of the game and never trailed in the final half in handing the Wildcats their second straight loss.
the Defenders and Wildcats played closely the entire first half with five ties, the last one at 25-25 with 7:42 left in the period. Dordt scored three straight field goals to open up a six point lead and went to the break up 39-35.
Trevor Wolterstorff scored the first points of the second half on a swooping lay up to make it 41-35 at the start of the intermission. Dordt eventually pushed the lead to 47-37. After a Portland Bible College time-out the Wildcats trimmed the lead to 50-47 with a 10-3 run but got no closer. The Defenders responded to the charge but getting the lead back to 61-51, capping a eight point run with a Michael Eekhoff free throw. The Defenders were able to keep the maintain the lead and didn't allow Portland Bible College to get closer than eight.
Dordt was led by Michael Eekhoff's 22 points with most of those coming on ventures into the lane. Shawn Keizer and Trevor Wolterstorff each had 18 points and Jordan Vogel knocked down 12 points in a reserve role. Kevin Fopma scored six on a pair of three-point tries. The Defenders converted 32-57 shots from the floor and outrebounded the Wildcats 34-28. Jordan Vogel had seven rebounds and Brandon Oldenkamp and Brett Heidema each had five caroms. Dordt won despite making just 12-23 free throw tries and were 1-10 at the charity line at one point.
"Everyone got in and everyone contributed to the win," said Dordt coach Ross Douma. "We challenged Michael Eekhoff to slow Stephen McCall down in the second half and he did a great job on defense. Our freshman kind of got their legs under them with the break."
Portland Bible's Stephen McCall kept his team in the game with 29 points--19 of them in the first half and knocked down five three-point shots. Michael Cooper had 11 points and ten rebounds in the loss.
