Dordt College Men's Basketball vs. Briar Cliff

December 9, 2009

(Sioux City, Iowa) The Dordt Defenders fell 77-71 to the Briar Cliff Chargers and drop to 7-4 overall and 1-3 in GPAC play. The Chargers improve to 9-1 on the season and are 3-1 in the GPAC.

A pair of Semprini 3 pointers gave the Chargers a 29-22 lead with 4:41 to go in the first half. With the score 33-26 Michael Eekhoff ran off 3 straight hoops for the Defenders to cut the margin to one at 33-32 with 1:56 to go in the first half and a Kingma 3 pointer gave Dordt the lead at 35-33 with 1:16 left. An old fashioned 3 point polay by Vander Feen for the Chargers gave Briar Cliff a half time lead at 36-35.

Fairly early in the 2nd half the Chargers built themselves a 7 point lead at 50-43 which they held at 14:45 on a Matt Geelan jumper. Dordt whittled away at the BCU lead and tied the game at 54-54 on a Wolterstorff jumper with 11:37 remaining. Dordt held the lead briefly at 56-54 on an Eekhoff basket with 9:35 to go. The teams were tied at 56, 58 and 60 until the Chargers rattled off the next 8 points leading 68-60 with 2:29 to go and road that lead in for the win. Dordt did get within 3 at 71-68 with 1:18 remaining on an Eekhoff layup but could get no closer.

"We played much better tonight defensively we just didn't shoot the ball very well, and you need both of those things to beat a good team on their own floor," stated Dordt Head Coach Ross Douma. "We outrebounded them tonight after giving up a bunch of offensive boards early, there were lots of positives to take from this game and I was very pleased with our effort. This season we have consistently gone to the free throw line but that just didn't happen in our contest tonight."

Dordt went 4-10 from the charity stripe while the Briar Cliff Chargers were 19 of 28.

Eekhoff had a game high 23 points to go along with 3 assists, 5 rebounds and a blocked shot. Wolterstorff finished with 19 points, 4 rebounds and an assist.

Kyle Semprini led the Chargers with 19 points, shooting 5 of 10 from 3 point range.
