Dordt College Men's Basketball vs. Morningside

(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Morningside Mustangs used a 55 point second half and held on for an 88-87 win over the Dordt College Defenders on Saturday afternoon in Great Plains Athletic Conference play.

The Mustangs overcame a nine point halftime deficit and trailed at one point by 13 late in the first half before staging the comeback. The Defenders got the lead with by pushing the tempo on in the first half and got up 42-29 on a pair of Shawn Keizer free throws with 1:01 left in teh half. Dordt was on a 15-4 run at that point but the Mustangs neutralized some of the momentum with a pair of free throws and a face away jumper by Eddie Marrs at the top of the key just before the buzzer for a 42-33 halftime score.

Dordt started slowly in the second half with Morningside tying the game at 57-57 and took the lead at 59-57. A Brandon Oldenkamp three gave Dordt a brief 60-59 advantage at the 9:55 mark. The two teams were tied again at 61 and again at 74 with the final tie coming at the 4:55 mark on a Shawn Keizer three-point shot. Marrs answered back with a jump shot at the 4:21 mark and the two teams missed four straight shots before Adam Palmer made two free throws at the 2:25 mark of the game for a 78-74 lead. Dordt trailed by as many as seven with 00:49 left but Kingma hit a pair of three's to cut the difference down to 84-88 with :09 left. A Brandon Oldenkamp three with under three seconds left made it 88-87 and it looked like Dordt would have another chance as a Morninside pass went over the top and looked destined to go out of bounds but Morningside was able to touch the ball in bounds, starting the clock and Dordt could manage just a heave by Oldenkamp as time expired.

Dordt was 29-62 from the floor and 12-27 on three pointers while converting 17-19 free throws. Morningside was 34-67 from the floor and 5-16 on three's while converting 15-19 free throws. Morningside held a 38-32 rebounding advantage.

Dordt got 22 points from Logan Kingma and 14 each from Trevor Wolterstorff and Oldenkamp. Wolterstorff had a team high eight rebounds and Michael Eekhoff had six rebounds and five assists.

Morningside got 20 from Marrs, 19 from Mitch Carstens and 18 from Adam Palmer.

Dordt drops to 7-3 overall and 1-2 in the league while Morningside is 6-4 and 2-2.
