(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Defender men finished 2-0 in the Defender Gold Classic this weekend as they completed the event with a 76-70 win over the Bellevue Bruins tonight to improve to 7-1 overall.
The win did not come easily although the Defenders held the lead for last 27 minutes.
Dordt held an early lead at 4-2 but gave the lead up and Bellevue took a 10-6 lead on a Jace Fredenburg lay up. Dordt got three points back on a Shawn Keizer basket and then took the lead on free throws by Justin Van Kooten at the 12:56 mark. With Bellevue concentrating their efforts on post defense the Defenders had to turn to their perimeter game and Keizer answered with 4-5 shooting by Keizer in the opening 20 minutes and 3-5 shooting by Brandon Oldenkamp. Dordt led 40-32 at halftime and extended the lead to 17 on a Jordan Vogel basket with 15:00 left in the game on an assist by Trevor Wolterstorff. From there Bellevue started to tighten the defense. The Bruins cut the lead to 55-45 on a pair of free throws by their burly post player Antoine Dade at the 12:05 mark.
Dordt responded with a 6-1 run to establish a 15 point lead but couldn't put the visitors away. The lead hovered between 12 and 15 points with a Logan Kingma lead extending the difference to 68-52 on a drive in the lane with 6:15 left. Over the next five minutes Bellevue cut the difference to 71-66 with a 14-3 run but the Defenders weathered the storm and made enough free throws to hold the 2009 National Tournament qualifier off.
Dordt made 26-63 shots for 41.3 percent and 8-18 three pointers. Dordt also cahsed on 72.7 percent of their free throws while making 16-22. Bellevue countered with 28-64 shooting but was stone cold from the three point line with a 4-22 day. The Bruins did hold a 41-35 rebounding advantage.
Keizer led Dordt with 21 points and he dished three assists. Michael Eekhoff had 15 points, nine rebounds and four assists while Logan Kingma had 14 points and five rebounds with three assists. Trevor Wolterstorff and Brandon Oldenkamp had eight and seven points each and Dustin Katje scored five in a reserve role. Oldenkamp also had three steals. Eekhoff became the 27th men's basketball player to enter the 1000 point club and has scored 1012 points in his three-plus seasons at Dordt.
Bellevue got 19 points from Avery Tyler and 12 from Aaryon Williams.
Dordt is 7-1 overall while Bellevue drops to 3-6.
The Dordt men next play a GPAC conference game as they head to Northwestern on Wednesday, December 2 for an 8:00 pm contest.
