Dordt College Men's Basketball vs. William Penn

(Oskaloosa, Iowa) The Dordt College Defender men's basketball team used a 15-0 run spanning the end of the first half and the start of the second half to take a lead they never relinquished in scoring a 102-92 win over William Penn in Oskaloosa, Iowa Tuesday night. The Defenders overcame an 11 point lead late in the first half to win their fifth game of the season.
The Defenders never led in the first half but fought to tie it 21-21 with 11:48 left in the half on a Dustin Katje basket. From there the Statesmen built the lead to 50-39 with Joel Stout knocking down a lay up with 1:35 left in the half. Dordt managed to cut the lead by five heading to halftime on free throws by Trevor Wolterstorff and a three-pointer by Logan Kingma.
Dordt started the second half with a 10-0 run as Wolterstorff scored the first two buckets of the second half and Michael Eekhoff made a lay-up. Back to back baskets by Logan Kingma completed the run. William Penn didn't score their first basket of the second half until the 15:59 mark.
Dordt extended the lead to 80-66 with 9:17 left and had to withstand a William Penn charge over the next six minutes that closed the lead to 83-80. A basket by Wolterstorff finally stopped the bleeding and Dordt went on to make their free throws and hold on for a 102-92 win.
Wolterstorff scored 24 points--20 of them in the second half. He was 9-13 from the floor and 6-7 on free throws. Logan Kingma and Brandon Oldenkamp each had 17 points and were both 7-13 from the field. Dustin Katje and Jordan Vogel had 15 and 10 points respectively in reserve roles.
Dordt held a 42-41 advantage on the boards with Oldenkamp getting a game high nine. Wolterstorff and Kingam both had six and Oldenkamp had six assists. Shawn Keizer added eight points and five assists. The Defenders made 40-74 shots and converted 16-22 free throws.
"We had great balance and we found out we could play some pretty good defense. The defense we played at the beginning of the second half was great," said Dordt coach Ross Douma.
William Penn got 24 points from Kris Miller and 23 by Joel Stout added 23. Caleb Stout led the Statesmen with eight rebounds.
Dordt is now 5-1 overall and will host Central Baptist (Arkansas) on Friday night and Bellevue (Nebraska) on Saturday afternoon.
