Dordt College Men's Basketball vs. Briar Cliff

February 18, 2009

(Sioux Center, Iowa) The Dordt College Defender men's basketball team lost an 88-83 decision to the Briar Cliff Chargers on Wednesday night in GPAC basketball at the De Witt Gym on Dordt College's campus.

The two teams played a high powered offensive game with Briar Cliff using a run at the end of the game to take control and ride the advantage in for a win.

Dordt trailed early and got down 24-16 when Chase Vander Feen hit his fourth three pointer of the first seven minutes. Dordt responded with a run to take the lead at 28-26 on a Logan Kingma jumper with 7:53 left. The two teams battled the rest of the half with neither taking more than a four point lead and Briar Cliff went into the intermission up 44-43.

The two teams fought through 17 lead changes for the game with Dordt taking a 71-68 lead at the 9:41 mark on a pair of Mark Rowenhorst three-pointers. The teams tied for the 13th time at the 7:33 mark on a Kyle Semprini jumper and the Defenders never led again with Briar Cliff building an eight point lead at 84-76 with 3:02 left. Dordt got a lay-in by Michael Eekhoff to cut the lead to six and a free throw for the three point play made it a five point game. Dordt got to within three at 86-83 on a pair of Brandon Oldenkamp free throws. A steal at halfcourt gave the Defenders the ball with :33 left and the Defenders went for two. With :23 left Michael Eekhoff had a shot in the lane that was just short and the Chargers converted free throws to preserve the win.

"I don't think we ever stopped them on offense," said Dordt coach Greg Van Soelen. "They are very good. We did not do the job on defense. Scoring wasn't the problem tonight. We scored 83 points at home and that should be enough."

Dordt made 30-62 shots for 48 percent and they were 12-23 on three-pointers. Briar Cliff made 31-55 shots and 11-20 three-pointers. Dordt was 11-15 on free throws and the Chargers 15-20. Briar Cliff enjoyed a 35-25 rebounding advantage and Dordt turned the ball over just seven times to 13 for the Chargers.

Dordt was led by Eekhoff's 29 points and he had three rebounds and three assists. Brandon Oldenkamp had 17 points and five rebounds while Dustin Katje had 13 points. Logan Kingma had seven points, five rebounds and three assists.
