Game Media
(Sioux City, Iowa) The Dordt College Defender men's basketball team dropped their fifth game in a row in a 90-65 loss to the Briar Cliff Chargers in Sioux City, Iowa.
Dordt fought back from an early deficit to tie the game at 15-15 on a Brandon Oldenkamp basket with 13:53 left in the game. The Chargers then went on a five point run and eventually extended the lead to seven with 6:23 left in the half at 29-22. Dordt did make a run at the Chargers to cut the lead to 32-31 but the run came at a cost as Oldenkamp left the game after coming down awkwardly after a driving lay-up that he got fouled on. Jeremy Zeutenhorst checked in to shoot the free throw and Oldenkamp never returned. Briar Cliff closed the half on a 9-2 run and was up 41-33 at the intermission.
Dordt scored the first two points of the second half on a pair of Logan Kingma free throws but the Defenders found themselves down 51-41 with 16:55 left. The Chargers proceeded to score the next ten points and the Defenders never sliced the lead down and Briar Cliff won the eventual 25 point decision.
Dordt was 23-64 from the floor and was 3-15 on three-pointers. Dordt did get to the free throw line for 19 attempts and made 16 converting 11-15 in the second half. Briar Cliff was 34-67 from the floor and made 13-32 three-pointers and was 9-13 on free throws. Briar Cliff enjoyed a 41-39 rebounding edge.
Mark Taatjes had 13 points to pace the Defenders and Oldenkamp had 12 points in 11 minutes of play. Logan Kingma scored seven and Chris Van Roekel had six. Michael Eekhoff had a team high eight rebounds to go with six points and Kingma had three assists.
"We never sustained anything on the defensive end," said Dordt coach Greg Van Soelen. "There were mismatches we thought we could take advantage of on offense. We lost Brandon in the first half to injury and that was one of the mismatches. He's going to get x-rays later tonight."
Briar Cliff had four players in double figures with Chase VanderFeen scoring 18, Derek Mechaelsen had 14, Kyle Semprini 13 and Brett Ratcliff 12. Matt Geelan had five assists and four players had four assists each. Dickes and Ratcliff each grabbed six assists.
