Dordt College Men's Basketball vs. Dakota Wesleyan
January 14, 2009
(Mitchell, South Dakota) The Defender men fell to Dakota Wesleyan tonight by a score of 86-59 in a GPAC contest held at the Corn Palace in Mitchell, South Dakota. The loss drops Dordt to 11-6 overall and 5-3 in GPAC play and marks the first time in the 08-09 campaign that Dordt has lost back to back ball games.
Dordt got off to a fast start, scoring the first 10 points of the contest and the Defenders went to the locker room with a 7 point margin at 40-33. Dordt had as much as a 29-11 lead in the first half but a 12 point run by Dakota Wesleyan closed the gap before halftime.
Eekhoff opened the second half with a bucket for Dordt but the second half would be a sharp contrast to the first as the Tigers came out strong, opening up the half with an 11-4 run, quickly tying the game at 44-44 with 16:11 remaining to play. The Defenders were outscored 53-19 in the second half of play, shooting just 32% from the floor, including 0-9 from behind the arc.
"We played pretty inspired ball in the first half, we were the aggressor and had them guessing a little bit," remarked Coach VanSoelen after the contest. "The second half was a totally different game for us. Dakota Wesleyan ratcheted it up defensively and we did not respond well and became a little passive, it was a disappointing half of basketball. With USF coming up on Saturday, we need to get our confidence back and the best way to do that is go out, play well and get a win."
Michael Eekhoff finished with 15 points, 5 assists, 2 steals and 2 rebounds to lead the Defenders. Brandon Oldenkamp rebounded from an injury to score 14 and Mark Taatjes added 8.
The Tigers had 4 players in double figures and were led by Colby Fitzgerald's 18 points.
