Dordt College Men's Basketball vs. Mount Marty

January 3, 2009

(Yankton, South Dakota) With a 71-63 victory over the Mount Marty Lancers in Yankton, South Dakota the Dordt men's basketball team improves to 11-4 overall and 5-1 in GPAC conference play.

Dordt led by 2 points on 4 occasions in the first half while the Lancers led by as many as six. There were seven ties in the opening 20 minutes of play but with a bucket by Michael Eekhoff late in the half providing a 33-32 cushion.

Dordt got off to a good start in the second half and held a 48-40 lead at 12:36 remaining in the game, the Lancers rallied back and tied the game at 50-50 at the 9:43 mark. The Lancers led Dordt briefly at 55-53 but Dordt would tie the game at 55-55 on a Kingma jumper with 7:38 remaining and would never surrender the lead, stretching the gap to as many as ten and finishing with the 71-63 victory.

Dordt was led by Michael Eekhoff who finished the night with 23 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists. Brett Heidema had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds as well as 4 blocked shots and Logan Kingma knocked down 21 for the Defenders. Chris Van Roekel had 3 steals for Dordt.

"Our main goal was to leave with a win and we accomplished that," said Coach VanSoelen. "We let them hang around a bit by not rebounding as well as we should have. We shot the ball pretty well in the second half but couldn't keep the pace of play where we wanted it to be. Eekhoff did a nice job in transition for us and Heidema did well on the boards. We are definitely happy to be where we are at 5-1 in conference play. We are looking forward to a week of practice as we prepare to play Nebraska Wesleyan next Saturday."

The Lancers held a small rebounding edge over the Defenders as they pulled down 38 boards to Dordt's 33. The turnovers were very close as Dordt gave up the ball 16 times and the Lancers coughed up 15.

Dan Harmon was the top scorer for the Lancers, finishing the ball game with 14 points to go along with 5 rebounds and 5 assists.
