(Orange City, Iowa) The Dordt College Defender men’s basketball team had no trouble with the York Panthers in non-conference basketball Wednesday, December 31 in the Pizza Ranch Classic hosted by Northwestern in Orange City, Iowa. The Defenders raced to a double digit lead almost immediately and were up 53-33 at halftime.

The Defenders then scored the first eleven points of the second half to race away for the eventual 104-73 win. The Defender scorched the nets for 19-28 shooting in the first half for 67.9 percent and got 20 first half points from Brandon Oldenkamp.

Dordt outrebounded the Panthers 42-23 and committed 18 turnovers to 16 for York. Dordt was led in scoring by Oldenkamp’s 23 points on 7-9 shooting and he had six three-pointers. Logan Kingma scored 19 and was 3-5 on three-pointers. Michael Eekhoff tossed in 14 and Brett Heidema had a hard-earned 14 to go along with a game high nine rebounds. Heidema made 8-10 free throws in the win. Jeremy Zeutenhorst scored ten in a reserve role with a total of 12 players scoring for the Defenders. Eekhoff dished off a game high eight assists and had four steals while Justin Van Kooten dished six assist and Heidema had five.

“You get in a game like this and you want to be fair and get your regulars their work and some other players more of a chance to play. Hopefully we did that,” said Dordt coach Greg Van Soelen. “We thought after watching York last night we’d be able to go inside with Brett and hitting some three’s helped open things up as well. We have opportunities coming up by going on the road to Mount Marty and Nebraska Wesleyan in our next two games.”

York was led by Dashon Jones with 23 points and five rebounds while Jeremy Roman added 10 for the 0-15 Panthers.

Dordt is 10-4 and will travel to Mount Marty in Yankton, South Dakota on Saturday, January 3 for a 4:00 start in their next outing.
