Dordt College Men's Basketball vs. Doane

December 13, 2008

(Sioux Center, Iowa) Tonight,in the last game before the semester break, the Dordt men defeated Doane 57-46 in a GPAC match-up to lift the Defenders record to 9-3 overall and 4-1 in conference place.

Offense was a premium thorugh out the game with the Defenders falling behind 5-2 at the 12:47 mark of the first half. Dordt went on a 10 point run to take a lead they never gave up the rest of the game. The run was ignited two jumpers by Logan Kingma and a three-point basket by Brandon Oldenkamp--one of three the wing player would hit for the game. With 3:20 left in the first half Dordt looked poised to pull away with a 21-14 lead. Dordt didn't score again the rest of the half and Doane pushed in two baskets to make it 21-18 at halftime.

Dordt pushed the lead to ten in the second half at 33-23 with 10:25 left on a Logan Kingma jump shot. Doane responded with four unanswered points but the mini-run was answered by Dordt with a six point run of their own with Brandon Oldenkamp making a steal and layup followed by a Michale Eekhoff jumper and a Logan Kingma tip in off a missed three-pointer.

The Defenders held the Tigers off at the end and made their free throws to seal the 11 point win with the last 12 points coming from the free throw line.

Logan Kingma paced the Defenders with 20 points and 7 rebounds in the contest while Michael Eekhoff finished the night with 14 points, 4 assists and 3 rebounds.

The Tigers were lead by 6-10 center Jack Lind who had 21 points to go along with 12 rebounds. Lind was the only Doane player in double figures. "I was proud of our defensive effort tonight, that's what won us the basketball game," said Head Coach Greg VanSoelen. "When you shoot 29% in the first half and you still have the lead you've obviously played some pretty good defense. Although it was not the prettiest game, you will get that some nights in the GPAC. Record wise we are right where we want to be going in to the break."

Dordt was 18-50 from the floor and 16-25 on free throws while Doane was 20-55 from the floor and 4-6 on free throws. Doane had a 38-32 rebounding edge but they turned it over 21 times to Dordt's 17. Doane falls to 0-4 in the GPAC and 6-8 overall.

Dordt will enjoy over two weeks off as they play again on Tuesday, December 30, 2008 against Bellevue in the NW Classic in Orange City with the tip-off at 6:00 pm.
